FIFTH TEST MATCH

SOUTH AFRICA V. M.C.C. BAILS NOT CORRECT SIZE. (UNITED PBZSS ASSOCIATION —BT ' EJUSCTBIC TELBQBAPH—COPTBtOHT.) (Received February 22nd, 5.5 p.m.) DURBAN, February 21. Play in the fifth Test match, which commenced to-day, was curtailed to eighty minutes owing to rain. The teams were:— South Africa. M.C.O. H. B. Cameron A. P. F. Chapman A. J. Bell R. B. S. Wyatt ! J. A. Christy W. R. Hammond j J. A. Cochran . M. Leyland E. It. Dalton E. Hendren Q. McMillan M. 3. Turnbull B Mitchell' Farrimond I. J. Seidle M. W> Tate H. W. Taylor W. Voce K. Viljoen J. 0. White o.' It. Vincent I. A. R. Peebles Chapman won the toss and put in South Africa on a drying wicket. Fortunately, the wicket dried slowly, and was on the easy side. The start was delayed for twenty minutes because the bails were of incorrect size, owing to the manufacturer's mistake. It was found that every combination of bails available madn the wickets 9| inches wide instead of the regulation nine inches. Finally it was decided to cut down the "boils. Chapman has lodged a complaint wtih the South African Board of Control, who acknowledged the complaint as legitimate, as the delay might have had a serious effect on Chapman's tactics. Chapman relied mainly on spin bowlers, who were supported by such good fielding that Seidle and' Mitchell were able to score only 27 in an hour. Tate was the most dangerous bowler. South Africa have scored 32 without loss, Mitchell not out 28, Seidlo not out 9. Rain stopped the play.

WEST INDIES V. NEW SOUTH WALES. VISITORS* BRIGHT BATTING DISPLAY. (Received February 22nd, 5.6 p.m.) SYDNEY, February 22. Bright, snappy batting on a perfect wicket, and in genial sunthitto, marked the first innings of West Indies in the match against New South Wales on the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday. The New South Wales bowlers, with the exception of McCabe and Ohllvers, were unimpressive, and the fielding was loose and very many: runs were given to the visitors from overthrows, while the fieldsmen were badly placed. Roach, Headley, and Constantino gave the 10,000 spectators many thrills while stealing runs by splendid running between the wickets, Headley at last losing his wicket in this manner. Rain occurred at 5.40 p.m., and New South Wales did not commence their innings, play ceasing for the day. Scores:— . WEST INDIES.
