BENEFIT CONCERT.
In aid of the Returned Soldier*' Unemployment Fund, and arranged by Professor J. Shelley and Mrs J. 0. Holmes, a concert was held in the Jellicoe Hall last evening. Despite the fact that the entertainment pro-. vidod was of an exceptionally high oner, the audience was not large. Outstanding was a dramatic reading from Shaw's "Major Barbara," by Professor Shelley. Taking for his choice the scene in the Salvation Army shelter,- Vhere Barbara is in the midst Of her converts, he prefaced the reading with a few remarks. When the play was first produced, he explained, Shaw obtained General Booth's permission to include the Salvation Army scenes. The General had no objection whatsoever. Professor Shelley asked his hearers to imagine the shelter. This was rather difficult on such a fine evening perhaps, becanse it w*» necessary to picture London, and snow. Then, as now, times were hard, and there was much /unemployment. From this the Professor turned to his reading, and for tie all too short space of time he had allowed hirasolf, he held his audience thoroughly interested ai)d amused. Included in the varied items given daring the evening were:—Pianoforte solo, "Sixth Rhapsody" (Liszt), Miss Marjorie Alex* ander; song, "My Heart' Is a Haven," Hiss Betty Simpson;-elocutionary item, "Yvonne/* Mr J. Laurenson; Instrumental trio, Misses Rennle; song, "Five and Twenty Sailor Men," Mr W. Cotton; song, "Danny Boy," Mrs D. Stallard; song, "Come, Sing to Me," Mr R. Allison; song, "Homing" (Del Riego), Mrs Davies; song, "Sincerity," Mr W. Cotton. The accompanist was Hiss Alice Gibb.
