The Square.

It is to be hoped that Cr. McLachlan not only "intends" to lodge a notice of motion rescinding the City Council's oetagonal shelters resolution, but that he'will carry out his intention, and in doing so say what ought to be said about the way in which the Council has treated the public. It is bad enough that the Council should vote away £I2OO of the ratepayers' money in mere bad temper and spite. When it does this "in committee," and deliberately flouts the right of the public to know who its friends and enemies are, there is one thing only for the public to do. Citizens may not be able to protect themselves while they are 1 .-presented by people who respect neither their rights nor their property.

They can at least assert themselves, and get ready to say what they think when tho occasion comes in April. Mr McLaehlan would have inspired more confidence if his decision had been announced in bolder terms; but no one else lias come to a decision at all — except the griulg'e-mong'ers and friends of " the people " —and lie has only to stand and fight to bring the enemy into .the open. Meanwhile it may be suggested ag,-/,i that the governing body of a City like Christchurcli ought to know how to call to its assistance the men and women whose advice would protect it against its own ignorance and bad taste. If it were necessary to build these shelters they should be placed in such positions, and drawn on such lines, that they would harmonise, as far as such tilings can harmonise, with the spirit and design of the Square, and of the City {tenera 11 v. It is intolerable that the few people who have feeling a.id knowledge should be ignored, for no other reason than because some one else has been elected.
