QUEEN CARNIVAL.

WALTHAM SCHOOL CEREMONY. The annual queen crowning ceremony and carnival concert of the Waltham school was held last evening in tho Sydenham Picture Theatre. Parents and friends of the children attended in great numbers, and vigorous applause greeted each item. At the commencement of the proceedings the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) gave a short address. He congratulated the school on the large attendance, and said that he hoped a good 6um would be raised for the school improvement fund. Mr J. J. Hurley, chairman of the Waltham School Committee, also spoke, and emhasised the need for money to make additions to the school equipment. On behalf of the committee ho thanked Mr and Mrs G. Wear, who had assisted in the organisation of the ceremony. The ceremony was preceded by a chorus by the School Choir, conducted by Mr Sydney Williamson. Then after a few introductory words by the Chancellor, Mr W. Doubleday, the Queen, Ruby Simpson, of Standard V,, was crowned, and conducted in state to the throne. The maids of honour were Etta Smyth, Standard IV., and Thelma Wilson, Standard VI. The speech from the throne, honours to the Queen's retinue, and honours to subjects followed. There were also songs and folk dancing. The programme of songs given by the choir and soloists during the evening was as follows: Lullaby, ''Golden Slumbers"; plantation song, ' 'The Old Banjo"; song and chorus, "Love's Old Sweet Song," Lorna Friar* song "The Little Old Garden," Dulcie Taylor*; song' •'The Dustman," Iris Nunan and Nola Sutcliffe; song, "When Song is Sweet," Gladys Small; chorus, (a) "Lullaby/* (b) "Now Is the Month of May"; solo and chorus, "Where My Caravan Has Rested/' Jack Knight; song and chorus, "Love's Echo," Pamela Cookson; old Irish, "Danny Boy," R e g. Macann; song. Cresses is Green," Jean Woolcock; chorus, (a) Kitty of Coleraine 1 ' '•Cherry Ripe."
