PICNICS. Picni.cs from St. Joseph's Convent School, Christchurch (170), and from one class of tho Sydenham School (10) visited Lyttelton yesterday, and spent the day at Corsair Bay. Harbour light Theatre. "Tito Golden Calf," an all-talking, singing, and dancing musical comedy starring Jack Mulhall, Sue Carroll, El Brendel, and Marjory White, is the chief attraction at the Harbour Light Theatre to-night. Tho supporting programme includes a I'ox Keivs, "Voices of Italy," and a comedy. On Saturday, "The Adventures of 513," a thrilling and realistic drama of submarines, s.nd featuring Kenneth MacKenna and Frank Albertson, will be screened. Unemployed Relief Work. Twenty-four men were engaged ut Lyttelton yesterday, to commence work on a stop-bank at Heathcote this morning. All the eligible married men were given employment, and also a few of the more necessitous single men. Tho work is being shared by the Lyttclton Borough Council and the Heathcote County Council, and two or three unemployed from Heathcote were among the number. f About 60 men gathered at the Council Chambers to apply for work. This number included many youths and boys, as well as a few seamen who have been out of employment for some time. The selection of men was made by Mr C. Hoskin, of the Labour Department, in conjunction with the Council officials. The men will be employed for two weeks, when it is likely that a | fresh batch will be engaged. j
