FIELD DAY.

MOTUKARARA FARMERS' UNION. Yesterday 20 members of the Motukarara branch of the Farmers' Union hold a field day m the Prebbleton Springston, Irwell, Dunsandcl, and Lincoln districts, visiting a number oi farms whoro manurial and grazing experiments were being conducted bv the Fields Division of the Agricultural Department iri conjunction with the Scientific Research Institute. Mr \V Stoddart, of the Fields Division, and Mr A. H. Play, M.Sc., .of tho ites'eareh Institute, accompanied tlie party, and explained the nature of tho various experiments. Tho visitors in tho morning inspected the wheat manurial trials on tho farin of Mr F. W. Carpenter, Prebbleton, where striking results hav© ■ been .secured from a top-dressing of sulphato of ammonia ; then a pasture experiment in to]>-dressing on the farm of Mr P. V. Bailey (Springston). An cxhausl tive experiment in tho relative values of practically all classes of ryegrass was inspected 011 the farm of .Mr 1. K. Buchanan (Meadowbank), and tho inspection of a rotational grazing and top-dressing area on Mr F. A. Wagner's farm followed. In tho afternoon a striking success in rotational grazing and top-dressing cm a 30-year-old pasture on tho farm of Mr D. Jones, M.P., at Dunsandcl, was inspected, and the party finished up tho day at Lincoln College. Hero Dr. O. 11. Frankcl, plant geneticist of tho Wheat Research Institute, described tho experiments being conducted with tho object of producing improved wheat strains. Mr M. ,h Scott, the College lecturer on animal nutrition, explained tho work in connexion with rotational grazing, 111 which outstanding results have been achieved, and Mr .T. W. Caldor tho operations concerning tho production of improved strains of grass and clover sred.
