FALSELY LABELLED MUTTON.

(rEOit our ow.\- corbespomdknt., LONDON, October -il. Another case of wrongfully supplying South American meat when New Zealand was asked for came before the Court at Gravesend. The matter was brought to light by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. The ease was against Edwin James Ibbetson, of Gravesend. Air G. D. Roberts, in outlining the case, said that a carcase was delivered to the Gravesend Poor Law Institution dressed in every respect to resemble New Zealand mutton. It was now admitted by defendant that the meat was an Argentine carcase, and it was clear that the greatest possible amount of deception was practised in order to make the carcase appear what it was not. The carcase upon delivery was found to be covered in a cloth bearing the "CMC Eclipse mark," and a label was also attached to the shank inscribed "CMC Eclipse Brand." For the defence it was stated that Ibbetson was in London when the alleged offence was committed. His manager, receiving an urgent order for a carcase of New Zealand mutton, and not; being able to obtain one from Jus.

cold stores in time, obtained one elsewhere, this > camouflaged as described, was sent to the institution. JTiues amounting to s£ls, with five guineas costs, were imposed.
