ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.
MEETING OF THE APPEAL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the special appeal committee connected with the St. John Ambulance Association's building scheme -was held last night. Present: Dr. J. Bestell Thomas (chairman), Dr. F. J. Borrie, Bishop Brodie, Messrs G. Peek, H. L. Bowker, and C. Buchanan. The Southbrook school wrote asking that twelve collecting cards for the senior pupils be forwarded, and it was decided to do so, leaving it to the discretion of the teacher as to issuing them before or after the holidays. It was decided to reply to the headmaster of the Oxford Consolidated School that it was within the area, and to send collecting cards. Several local bodies wrote, in reply to the committee's request that they should receive a deputation in connexion with the appeal, that' they had no funds from which to make grants to the committee's funds. Replies had betn sent setting out that' the committee's request did not necessarily mean that financial assistance was wanted, but that it was desired to make clear tho importance of the Association's work. The Canterbury Cricket Association agreed to receive a deputation at it's first meeting in January; the Canterbury Rugby Union at its meeting on the 16th; the Akaroa County Council on the 20th inst.; and the Heathcote County Council on the 12th inst. Arrangements were made for members of the committee to wait on these bodies. The Lyttelton Borough Council and the New Brighton Borough Council, it was reported, had promised to consider the making of grants when the estimates for next financial year were being considered.
