BOROUGH COUNCILS

NEW BRIGHTON. The fortnightly meeting of the New Brighton Borough Council was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr J. 11. Shaw), Crs. F. D. Muirson, S. J. Bargrove, E. A. M. Leaver, G. W, Bishop, J. S. Ainsworth, and J. McCreanor. Tho Council passed a resolution of sympathy with the relatives of the late Cr. R. A. Stokeß. The Mayor said that Mr Stokes had devoted a great dea*l of his time to public life and had always given his best. He would be greatly missed at the Council table. It was decided to accept the invitation of the Rev. T. M. Curnow to attend Divine service at St. Faith's Church on December 14th. An application from R. Brimms for permission to run a miniature golf course a-t North Beach, in Bowhill road, was granted, provided the plans were suitable. A deputation from the St. John Ambulance Association, consisting of Dr. Borrie and Mr C. W. Hervey, waited upon the Council lor tho purpose of enlisting the Council's sympathy and support in connexion with the free umbulance service. The Council decided to refer the matter to the next meeting of the Finance Committee. The Standing Committee's report .contained a letter from the Christchurch Tramway Board stating that the Board's committee had resolved that the inconvenience to tram traflic during the present summer season would be too great if the bridge were closed for three weeks, as desired by the Council The committee regretted that it could not xneet the Council's wishes in the matter. Arising out of the overseer's report, it was decided to recommend that the chairman of works should report upon the erosion at tho South Brighton bridge; also that the question of providing concrete lamp-posts for tho new concrete wall on the foreshore be left in the hands of the chairman of works ami the overseer. It wa>s decided to recommend that the chairman of works should be authorised to have the swings on the beach repaired. The report was adopted. The report of the Finance and By-laws Committee contained an application from S. Harris for permission to open the midget golf course on Christmas Day. On the motion of Cr. Bargrove, it was resolved to recom- , mend tha-t the application be granted. | It was decided to recommend the Council j to Mr L. A. Taylor the right to hire | deck-chairs on the foreshore at a fee of £6 10s for such right. The report was adopted. The following scale of fees for dog regis-, tration within the borough for 1931 was submitted to the Council for approval: 'sheep and cattle dogs 2s 6d, all others 10s each. The Mayor outlined a scheme for obta-ining a subsidy from tho Unemployment Board. After consideration, it was decided to recommend that the matter be left in tho hands of the Major, with power to act. Vacancy on the Council. Referring to the extraordinary vacancy on the Council, caused by the death of Cr. R. A. Stokes, the Mayor said that the Council should pass a resolution not to fill th# vacancy owing to the short term of office remaining. Cr. Leaver said thoy should not put the ratepayers to the expense of a by-election. Crs. Ainsworth and Muirson spoke on similar lines. It Mas decided not to fill the vacancy.
