THEATRE ROYAL.
"THE GAY NINETIES." The spirit of forty years aso is portrayed in a thoroughly convincing manner in "The Gay Nineties," the picturo showing at the Theatre Royal this week. Primarily the picture is pure farce, but this is relieved by a story that at times rises to quito dramatic heights. A hopeful feature of the production, now that so many American talkies harp on one insistent modern theme, is that it treats of a period that up to now has been ignored by scenario writers. Because of this a breath of fresh air runs through the whole 61m, and the attention of the audience cannot possibly wander. If the production possessed no other merit, no niceness of construction, and none of the brilliant acting of Marion Davies, then it would intrigue with its intimate revelation of what really did go on behind the scenes of the picture-postcards, and old fashion plates, that are now the sole witnesses of an ago that was, after all, only forty years ago.
