A COMMON POLICY.
PRESENT ECONOMIC SITUATION. EMPLOYERS to discuss plans. I'l Wellington to-morrow a conference of representatives of employers' Utilisations will take place to coner the adoption of a common policy 01 meeting the difficulties of the present economic situation. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, held m Wellington recently, it was decided to take the initiative in calling a combined conference with a view to considering current problems, and tomoirow's gathering is the outcome. In addition to the Employers' Fcdciation, the New Zealand Manutac-t-Uiers 1' ederation and organisations oi primary producers will be represented. ihe question of the exclusion of immigrants I rum overseas is being taken up with the Government immediately by the Employers' Federation, with a view to preventing an mtiux of people who would come in merely to take advantage oi the work of the Unemployment board. i'he matters to be discussed at today's conlerence will include the following : Wages—(a) Kates of wages to bo paid on relief works; (b) The method to bo followed in bringing about a general and uniform reduction of wages, in order to meet the present necessity tor reduction of costs. Government expenditure. Locil body expenditure. Railways under construction. A proposal that a later conference of the bodies meeting to-mor-row should be held together with representatives of labour organisations. Consideration of tho Arbitration Act. Mr V. E. Hamilton, president of tho Canterbury Employers' Association, left last evening for Wellington to attend a preliminary joint meeting of the Federation Executive and Advisory board for the pnrnose of formulating a policy to be followed to-morrow.
