SWIMMING.
* CARNIVAL TO-MORROW. To-morrow night at tho Tepid Baths the Canterbury Centro o£ tho New Zealand Amateur Swimming: Association will conduct its opening' carnival for this season. The programme promises to uphold the Centre's reputation for first-class entertainment. Perhaps tho most interesting- event on tlie programma will bft the series of races for the Primary Schools' Yaldhurst Shield. This event is contested over a series of distances, points being awarded for each distance. Seven schools have entered team*, and the contest is sure to be a keen one. Thero are several Canterbury championships on tho programme, and theso should provide some fine raring. Tlie inter-club handicap cvontß havo been well patronised by tho swimmers and thrilling finishes are assured. Several well-known swimmers have beon training hnrd, and are producing greatly improved times. A water' polo match will bo played. WATER-POLO TEAMS. SPORTS AT RANGIORA. Ideal weather' marked tlie opening of tho swimming season on Saturday afternoon at Rangiora, when about 200 children took part in a swimming carnival at the Municipal Baths. Through the interest taken by Mr Southgate, of the Rangiora School, in encouraging children to learn to swim, tho entries for tho different events were very good. Mr Walter Johnson (president of the Rangiora Swimming Club), in declaring tlio carnival open, said it was very encouraging to see th© increased interest taken by parents in encouraging children to learn to swim. Last year 37 school children had gained certificates, and judging by the number of children taking part in swimming events that day, this number would bo far exceeded this year.
