TAXI BUSINESS.
COUNCIL ORDAINS NEW BYLAW. A special by-law relating to the taxi business in Cliristchurch was ordained at last night's meeting of the City Council, and will come up for confirmation at a subsequent meeting. The by-law, which was moved by Cr. K. 11. Andrews (chairman of tho Bylaws, Finance, and Departmental Committee), was as follows: — The by-law sets out that neither the owner, driver, nor conductor of a vehicle required to be licensed, nor any other person, shall on any street or public, place either personally, or by means of any placard, writing, etc., tout or solicit for fares or hirings. The bylaw provides that nothing in it shall be deemed to render it unlawful for tho driver of a licensed vehicle, while in his seat on any duly-appointed stand, to call attention in any reasonable manner to the fact that the vehiclo is available to be hired. Tho by-law forbids tho soliciting of fares by the sounding of any bell, horn, drum, or loud-speakor. It proceeds: "No person, being the driver of a licensed vehicle (while there is any disengaged vehiclo attended by its driver waiting on any stand in Moorhouso avenue, within a distance of 200 yards from the main entrance to the Christchurch railway station) shall on the street within such distance accept any hiring unless ho shall have taken up his due position on such stand." The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) said that as the matter was of an urgent naturp the Council should confirm the by-law as early as possible. He therefore suggested that a special meeting for this purposo be held on January sth, adding that the business would occupy only about five minutes. It was decided that the meeting be held at noon on January 12th.
