TROLLEY-BUS BODIES.
TRAMWAY BOARD MEMBER COMPLAINS. "There has been a tendency ever since you fellows got in charge to put as much work as you can in the hands of private enterprise, to the detriment of our own departments," said Mr D. Sykes at yesterday's meeting of the Christchureli Tramway Board, •when a report by the Works and Traffic Committee was before it, recommending the acceptance of tenders for trolleybus bodies. "I want my vote recorded against the report." The report stated: "The Works and Traffic Committee of the Board which recently went out of office accepted certain tenders which are now submitted to the new Board for confirmation:— "Six trolley-bus bodies from Messrs Boon and Co. at £.719 each; the first body to be delivered within 12 weeks, the remaining five at intervals of two weeks. "One hundred tons of bitumen from the Vacuum Oil Company at HQ 10s 3d per ton; immediate delivery." Mr H. Pearce said he was rather surprised at Mr Svkes's complaint. The Board's men were all fully occupied, and to undertake the work suggested would entail the engagement of ftiore men. Mr Sykes: I am not saying that we haven't a cheap job, because we have. It's principle! Mr \V. Ilavward: I take my full share of responsibility for the committee's decision. We have not the men, and the work will be done better and cheaper than we could do it ourselves. The report was adopted.
