. i —— INSPECTION OF SHEDS. CONFERENCE OF LOCAL BODIES. To gather material for :i conference which is to be held early in January, representatives of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, the Lyttclton Harbour Board, the Canterbury Manufacturers' Association, and the Canterbury Progress League made yesterday the first of a series of inspections of the goods sheds at the Christehureh railway .stai lion.
Tiio inspection was in one way fruitless, for, although there are now five overseas vessels unloading at Lyttclton, there was no congestion in the sheds. "Since so much cargo was being unshipped, wo thought that yesterday would be a good day for the first inspection," said Mr \V. Uottrell, chairman of the Importers' Commit tee of the Chamber, which has called the conference. "We thought there might bo some congestion, but there was none. The representatives, however, made notes 011 the facilities fuel working of the sheds, and had an interesting talk with the goods agent. At the conference which will be held after the holidays, we hope to be able to make some good suggestions." . Recommendations to be Made. Mr Bottroll said that several inspections would be necessary before they would know what recommendations to make to the Department. In order to understand the Department's problems, they wished to see the men in the sheds working under difficulties during congestion. As it happened', however, not only were the sheds clear, out the Waltlinin yards were quite empty. Besides Mr Bottrcll, there were pros ent Air 11. Holland, M.P., Captain H. Monro (Lyttclton Harbour Uoard), and Messrs F \V. J Bolton and G. IT. Congreve (Canterbury Manufacturers' Association), R. 11. Webb am 1 G. M. Hall (Canterbury Progress League), and J. Roy Smith (Canterbury Chamber of Commerce). The railway goods agent, Mr G. Drummond, attended on behalf of the Department. No Congestion in Sheds. The party met at the "D" shed, and after discussing the position with Mr Drummond went on- to the Waltham yards. Tliey returned later and briellv inspected tiie other sheds. Mr Drummond pointed out that his men wore keeping pace with the cargo, and that in ail the sheds there was ample space in spite of the unloading of so many ships at once. There was no shortage of trucks since these had been increased by SO new LA waggons. At Waltham yards all the trucks were empty, and awaited transportation tu the West Coast. The conference will He attended by all who made the inspection, and also by Messrs M. Stevenson (chairman of the Transport Committee of the Progress League), Norton Francis, 'A. O. Wilkin-on, 0. J. Wilson, and H. Chapman (Canterbury Chamber of Commerce), H. T. Armstrong, M.P., and C. 11. Olibborn (Lvttelton llarbo.tr Board), C. S. MeCullv (Canterbury Manufacturers' Association).
