BOWLING.
STEANS CUP CONTEST. SOUTH CANTERBURY WIN. I'or tlio third year in succcssi'.'ii ("bo repieeetitatives of the South Canterbury Bo'vlingl Centro defeated tlio City rinks in a Steana Cup contest, on the Canterbury Club's green on Saturday afternoon Both Centres drew on country players to mako up their eight rinks, the South Canterbury team including members of the Ttimuka and uimato Cluba and the Christchurch representatives I'O'.vlerg from Kiilvaia and A;;Kburton. A triflo slow at first, the green became faster as th© afternoon passed, and the conditions wero reallv for accurate howling. "M r . * presented the cup for cojnpfctition between the Christcliurch and South Bowling Centres on December l«t, 1923, since when it has been held during the successive Beasons by tlie following: 1923-21, South Canterbury; 192-1-25, Cluistchurch; 1925-26, Soatb Canterbuty; 192G-27, Christehurch; 1927-28, ChrUtchurch; 1925-20, South Canterbury; 192U-UO, South Canterbury. On Saturday the southern players found the strength of the green before their opponents, several of their rinks establishing a. good early lead. Eventually they finished with a margin of 2G points over tho eight, the totals scored being: South Canterbury 202, Christehurch 176 In only one of tho rinks did tho visitors score anything like urunaway victory, and in most of lliem tho margin at tlio final head, the twenty-fifih, whs only a few points. South Canterbury won six of the rinks and Christcliurch two. Tho winning Christehurch skips wore Dr. Marks and B. J. Finnegan. Xj. Dcwar's rink took the 3ead early against Kollirson, but on the eighth h?ad the latter was in front, 10-9. They drew level again on the next, and tho play was most interesting thoieaftcr, the rinks being equal, 19 all, on tho twentieth, and 20 all on tho twenty-second did not add to his score after that. Tho contest between Mar-is aud Young waa also close all tho way, the score being even on the sixth and fourteenth heads Marks then took a lead of seven, hut w-js only one point ahead, 25-2-1. on the twentythird head. His last two scores were sincrle^. T. "Edwards has lost little of the fckill which has made him a prominent figure at New Zealand tournaments, and spectator* followed the play of his rink with close interest. He found Watson a doughty opponent, but held the lead front tlio firsthead. The margin was as high as 13 points on the eleventh, Watson's be*t effort being when he reduced it to three on the twentvthird. Cowles won hjs contest wilh Hedges by 12 point 3 in the lowest scoring of the match. The South Canterbury rink was in front from the fourth head, their opponents getting within two points on the fifteenth. It war a procession until the last, when Hedges made a four. Finnegan was at homo on the Canterbury green, and had with him proved players, but their opponents bowled so well that ,l io Christ-church representatives had only the modest margin of four points at the finish. Until tho thirteenth head Thomeon hnd the better pro3pect3, but his advantage of five points then raoidly disappeared, I'innegrin tpking the lead on the seventeenth. Thio marked the beginning of the interesting stages, and fortunes see-sawed, Pinnegan gaining the lead again with only one luad to go. Another exciting struggle was {hat between Moyes and "Efford. It was a neck-and-neck contest, the scores equal as late as the eighteenth head. "RfTord could not wipe out tho margin of six which Moyes had established by the twenty-third. D. Dewar's rink did nit Q c fh<? early scoring against Wilson's, and led 19-7 at, one stage. Christehurch improved to 22-24 on the last but one head, but this was tho closest they reached. Chambers looked a winner all over on tho early heards against Hawkey, but the latter had drawn level by the eleventh. His opponent went away again, tho rinks being equal, 17 all, on the twenty-second. Chambers took a pair on tho next. Hawkey responding with a three and a single. Tho trophy was presented to the winner* at a dinner held in the- Tudor tearooms, ct which tho toasts of tlio two Centres were honoured. Mr C. J. Morrison, vice-presi-dent of the Christehurch Centre, presided. The following ar<> the detailed results, Ch-ristchurch rinks being mentioned first : f F. Barrett, A. Price. «T. Oagliardi, A.
