(' Received December 7th, C>.o r- m 0 SHANGHAI, December C. j Mrs Havward and Miss Comersal, who I were recently rescued from Chinese bri-_] gands, have been interviewed at Pe- i king. They made an adventurous jour- j ncy l'rom Lancliow for 42 days, accompanied, by merchants, and escorted byMongols. Brigands made a surprise attack, when the women were dragged from' the party, with the intention of holding them for ransom, but the Mongols in'iuliter-attacked and rescued them. The party retreated to the mountains, where they spent eight freezing days. Although the provincial authorities had four thousand troops, nothing was done to effect a rescue until the diplomatic party arrived.
