TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. The Board of Governors of the Technical College met last night. Present: Messrs McGregor Wright (chairman), W. E. Gahagjui, J. W. Graham, G. E. Franklin, W. 11. Winsor, G. A. Pascoe, J. J. Hurlev, A. 11. Scales, and Mrs C. J. Ball. The chairman's report set out that no intimation had been received yet as to whether the Kural Vocational League proposes to conduct a camp next year to got town boys out for a week on the land. The boys of the college agricultural class appreciated last year's camp. The Minister for Education (Hon. 11. Atmore) wrote, oil November 19th, that it is expected that the Public 'Works Department would have the working plans for the new school at Papanui ready in a fortnight, and ho would send them to the Board for inspection when completed. In May last, on tho Minister's recommendation, a substantial grant for the building was approved by Cabinet. Tenders would be called with as little delay as ppssiblc. In acknowledging tho letter, the hope was expressed that tenders would be called before tho end of the year. The chairman said that a meeting of the Buildings Committee would be held as soon as the plans came to hand, that committee having been authorised to deal with tho matter. Tho Appointments Committee reported having: decided to await further information from the Trades' Committee, after that committco has met representatives of the Printing Apprenticeship Committee, before reporting on tho formation of a printing class in the day school. The appointment of Miss E. li. Smith as part-time commercial teacher had been approved. The Board was recommended to give general support to the proposal put forward by tho Associated Chambers of Commerce for the establishment of commercial certificates. The principal had been instructed to advertise for an instructor to fill tho vacancy caused by Mr C. J. Goldstone's resignation. The report was adopted. Tiie Finance Committee reported that the purchase of a small area ot land adjoining the playing fields from Mr K. Fowler had been completed. On tho recommendation of this committee a sub-committee was sot up to discuss and report on the Parliamentary Recess Committee's report on education. The sub-committee consists of Mrs Ball and Messrs Pascoe, Seth-Smith, West, Franklin, Scales, and Thurston. The principal (Dr. D. E. Hansen) reported that scholars at tho college had been successful in tho Acclimatisation Society's essay competition on "Birds of New Zealand." The success included second and third places in the junior section, and first in the senior section. The school rifle shooting meeting was held at Redcliffa last Saturdav.
