A NEW HOSTEL.

CONTROVERSY ENDED. (press association telzgram.) WANGANUI, December 4. The foundation stono of the newTechnical College Hostel was laid today by the Hon. H. Atmore, who was the recipient of a golden trowel from the pupils, and a carved Maori canoo from the contractors. The ceremony marks the close of a somewhat humorous episode which has !>een referred to as the battle of the foundation stones. On the eve of the last election the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates laid the stone, but his Party was defeated. Mr Atmore, with the reins of office in iiand, altered the plans to give a more pretentions building. The question then arose which stone would be !aid and a majority ot the Board of Governors decided in favour of Mr Atmore. and there developed a wordy warfare in the Press which has been definitely settled now ■with the Atmore stone in place. Interesting exhibits of the ceremonywere two plans, one of the decapitated hostel, and the other of the one now in course of erection.
