LIFE SAVING.

CANTERBURY CENTRE. ANNUAL meeting of delegates. ,fourteenth annual meeting of the Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association was held last evening, Mr C. A. Cooper presiding. Hie annual report stated that, in >each controls, patrolmen were appointed during last Christmas and school holidays on the North, New Brighton, and Sumner beaches, and number of rescues effected proved without a doubt that patrolman were un absolute necessity. The thanks of 1° A -j- socll ition were due to all those wno, by their financial assistance, inaue the appointments possible. Unfortunately, the Cliristchurcli publichad been sadly lacking in practical sympathy towards beach patrols, and, unless some guarantee was forthcoming that the necessary funds would be provided to maintain three patrolmen 'or at least eight weeks during the coming season, the Association would have to consider very seriously whether it was worth while carrying on with the scheme. Tho balance-sheet showed that the sum of £'B 0s lid stood to the credit of the general account, and £6 os lOd to the credit of the beach patrol account. The total excess of assets over liabilities was £'l27 IGs :)d. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman said that the Association %vas in every way in a satisfactory xs°sition. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows: —Patron, Mr F. D. Kesteveii; president, Mr W. H. Benson; vicepresidents, Captain A. W. Owles, Messrs W. A. Smith, G. Pearce, S. K Bassett, A. R. Blank, E. A. Robinson, and P. R. Cliniie; local consul, Mr G. Pearce ; hon. auditor, Mr L. C. Matson; hon. secretary, Mr A. I. Cottrell; hon. treasurer, Mr D. V. Wilson; chief examiner, Mr C. A. Cooper; examiners, Messrs C. R. Riordan, G. Pearce. L. Sutherland, and W. H. Benson.

Mr \Y. H. Benson presided at an ordinary meeting of the Association, held after the annual meeting. The sub-committee which had been set up to consider the question of standardising tho surf life-saving competitions made their reoort. recommendinsr the adoption of a number of rules. Tho recommendations and rules were adopted, with some amendments. The Sumner Surf and Life-Saving Club wrote that the club did not consider the present allocation of points for awards in the Wigram Cup competition satisfactory, in that the bronze medallion and the surf award gained tho same number of points, which appeared to bo out of proportion, and the largo attendance at schools made it practically impossible for smaller surf clubs to compete for and win the trophy. The matter was referred to also in a letter from the Royal Life-Saying Society, which stated that the Society had decided that any alteration in the directions indicated would be unfair to the swimming clubs. It was decided to forward a copy of the Royal Life-Saving Society's letter to the Sumner Club. It was decided to cancel the affiliation of tho Association with tho Roval Life-Saving Society for the coming season.
