THE APPOINTMENT OF GOVERNORS.
TO TH3 BDITOB OF THB FBKRB. Si r> —My attention has been drawn to a telegram from London, dated November 4th, appearing in your paper, and stating-that "Australia's next Governor-General will be recommended to his Majesty by the Australian, and not the British Cabinet." It appears to us that, baldly stated in these words, the announcement is somewhat misleading, aa these appointments are, in future, to be made on the advice of the responsible Dominion Ministers, but with this proviso—that the selection of the Dominion Ministers shall be acceptable to the King before being submitted to his Majesty. This Council has obtained more than one hundred and thirty-four thousand (134,000) signatures to a petition, which has been presented to the King, asking that the appointment of the King's representatives shall bo his Majesty's prerogative, and not subjected to political influences. My Council is satisfied that the arrangement which has been arrived at, as stated in the cable above-mentioned, will completely safeguard the provisions we have asked for.—Yours, etc., DOROTHY P. PENBERTHY, Honorary Secretary, Council of Combined Empire Societies. 1-9 Collins Place, Melbourne, November 24th, 1930.
