PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.

HUMANITARIAN AND ANTIVIVISECTION SOCIETY.

The annual meeting of the Humanitarian and Anti-Vivisection Society was held in the Society's room laat week. Tho Dominion president (Mrs A. D. Houston) occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of members. The audited balance-sheet wa3 approved. The thanks of the Society were recorded for the assistance given by Miss Lucy Cowan, Miss Jessie.Mackay, and the "Kind Deeds' Club." It was reported that various bridge parties had been held to help to raise funds for the carrying on of the work of tho Society, and subscriptions had been generously given by citizens towards the Society's share of contribution of cost of the City Council lethal chamber erected at the request of the Society. The president stated that after considerable difficulty it had at last been possible to obtain a suitable lethal chamber in which animals could be "put to sleep'' in thirty seconds. This lethal chamber was tho Society's own property for use by the owners of animals. A vote of sympathy was passed with Miss K. Mooro in her recent illness, A hearty vote of thanks was corded to Miss' Forrest for her untiring support to the Society. It was stated that she had disposed of seventy-five dogs and about twenty cats during the year, forty-nine of whom had been placed in good homes. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: —Patron, Mrs C. A. Fraer, J.P.; Dominion president, Mrs A. D. Houston; vice-presidents, Mrs Berthron-Brown, Miss A. Forrest; honorary secretary, Mr E. Bartram; assistant secretary, Miss McPhail; honorary treasurer, Miss Allen; honorary auditor, Mr T. E. Brown; honorary solicitor, Mr H. C. D. van Asch; committee, Messrs A.' E. Brown, P. H. Brown, Hanham, Massey, Mesdames Angus, Henderson, Kelly, Misses Brown, M. E. Guy, Sutherland-Smithj and Worthington (2). The member* present spoke of the great assistance given by the Press of Christchurch in furthering the Society's appeal for a City Council lethal chamber, without which the Society could not have done such good work.
