Council told ma to do when I recommended a reduction, keep quiet. At liiat time we had a reduction of 3s a ton, which increased our profits by £l'o a year." Mayor Slighted. At last night's meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council, the (Mr W. T. Foster) referred to the visit to Lyttelton of the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe, and deplored tho fact that no invitation had been extended to a representative of the Borough. Council to attend the luncheon given by the Harbour Board at Lyttelton to their Excellencies. The Mayor said be was gratified at the response of the citizens to tlio - lit* vitation to bo present at the schoolground to greet Lord and Lady Bledisloe. The visit had been very successful and enjoyable to all concerned. There had been one unfortunate incident, however. A slight had been placed on tho Borough by the Harbour Board in not inviting a representative of tho Council to attend tho luncheon given on the tug to Lord and Lady Bledisloe. "I was in the company of their Excellencies right, up to-the time when it was necessary for them to go down to the tug. I can tell you I felt it,, in having to leave them in Norwich quay to go to the tug, practically by themselves. I took 'it as a slight, not upon myself personally, but on tho town of Lyttelton. I don't think such a thing would have occurred anywhere else in New Zealand. I feel that an injustico has been done the town."
Unemployment Kelief. At last night's meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council the Mayor reported that he had that morning attended a meeting of representatives of local bodies at' Christchureh, to consider means of providing relief worlc for unemployed, to tide them over the Christmas season. He stated that a grant of £25,000 had been made by the Unemployment Board for relief -work to be put in hand immediately. Of this amount £2OOO had been granted to the Christchureh City Council. Christchureh Was willing that some of this money should be available to adjoining local bodies. The amount was granted on a basis of £2 for every £1 spent by the local bodies. He thought some effort should be made by the Council to use some of the subsidy to assist the unemployed before Christmas. All labour would be engaged by the Government Labour Bureau, but it could be arranged for Lyttelton men to be cmployed. At the same time he made a strong appeal to residents to give employment to men in clearing their properties of noxious weeds.
Cr. Miller moved that the matter be given consideration and left in tho hands of the Mayor, tho chairman of Works (Cr. F. E. Sutton), and chairman of Estates (Cr. W. Wales). In seconding the motion, Cr. Fenton said tho Couucil should b6 careful not to overspend or it might be compelled to put of its regular hands before the end of the financial year. Cr. Sutton said at present the Council was spending £2O a week on unemployed relief, and keeping its regular hands on. It would cost the Borough £l5O to provide a couple of weeks' work for tho Lyttelton unemployed before
Christmas. The Council had already' spent £4OO this year. Cr. Lester suggested that a commencement should be made on the new re:'?"tion area. . The Mayor said the area was not yet dedicated to the Council, and any expenditure would be illegal. The motion was carried.
