J ho invitation of the vicar of Holv Trinity, the Rev. A. C. Purchas, for the .Mayor and Courjeillors to attend the anniversary service, to bo held 011 the evening of Sunday, December 14t,h lining the 80th anniversary of the arrival of the i'irst Pour Ships, was accepted. Tho manager of the Stato Coal Department notified (lie Council that owing to the increase in railway tariff from the mines to -Lyttelton, of 2s Id per ton, the price (if coal to tho Council would be increased l.y that amount. Tho Oxford Con it I y Council wrote asking the Council's support of a resolution urging the liospital I3oard, in view of the serious financial difficulties under which local bodies and the farming community are at present labouring, to keep tho Board's estimates and levy down to tho lowest possible figure during tho coming year. The letter was received. Miss C. Williams, secretary of the Te Wliaka Tennis Club, wroto calling the attention of tho Council to tho necessity of providing an outlet for a drain below tho stono wall of the c.lub'a courts, and also to the need for a coat of paint on tho pavilion. The Borough Engineer said the drain, emptiod into a trap, which could not be seen, thenco into tho main drain. The matter of painting tho pavilion was referred to the Estates Committee. A deputation from tho St. John Ambulance Association, consisting of Dr. Borrie and Mr Peck, waited upon the Council, to ask that assistance should bo given in raising funds for the Association's Pree Ambulance Service.

The Mayor said the Council had littlo money in hand at present, but the matter would be given the fullest consideration in the preparation of next year's Estimates. Tho project was a worthy one, and deserving of tho fullest support of the Council. After the deputation had withdrawn Cr. Sutton moved that a letter be sent to tho St. Jnhn Ambulance Association informing it that the Council had no funds available this year, and that the matter would be considered when drawing up next year's Estimates. 011 tho motion of Cr. Gower it was decided that the lighting of tho wharf and roads at Diamond Harbour should bo resumed. Tho Lyttelton Ladies' Swimming Club were granted the use of six dress-ing-sheds, one afternoon weekly, during tho season, and tho Club's invitation to the opening day, Saturday, was accepted. Tho Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department, informed the Council that the Minister for Public Works had agreed to make a rebato of £52 14s 2d on tlio September quarter for power supplied on account of economies exercised during the power shortage.

In reference to the Council's staff residing outside Lyttelton, from whom various reasons were received for doing so, it was decided that they be informed that should tho occasion arise, only those residing in the Borough would be considered when vacancies occur on tho permanent staff.

Tho Lyttelton Men's Swimming Club and W. V. Dromgoole, jun., wrote in roferonco to Corsair Bay. It was decided to inform them that their complaints were being attended to, also that tlie Council had spent a lot ■of money on improving the Bay, and it was only reasonable that they: should help in proventing damago being done to tho Council's property. The Canterbury Education Board asked the Council to repapcr the cookery room leased by the Board, from the Council, in tho Colonist Hall. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman of Estates and Borough Engineer, with power to act. Notes. During consideration of a request from the To Whaka Tennis Club, for the pavilion to be painted, it was suggested that perhaps the club members would do the painting if tho Council supplied the paint. "Oh, go easy," interjected Cr. Lester, "there's enough of them around there doing their own painting now." (Laughter.) "Will the chairman of Lighting tell us if it will bo necessary for the price df gas to be increased?" was tho question put by a Councillor, when a letter was received stating the prico of era 1 would be increased by 2s Id a ♦.Oil.
