CLAY BIRD SHOOT.
SOUTH ISLAND COMPETITION. WIN FOR LYTTELTON CLUB. 'The annual South Island gun leama' competition for the CA.C. cup "was won on. Saturday afternoon by the Lyttelton Gun Club, Christchurch No. 1 and North Canterbury being - second and third. Tho competition was held under the auspices of the Christchurch Gun Club, at Sockbucn,.. the conditions being 16 birds from 16 yanli*. Jt was open to all affiliated club# in the South Island and there, were 63 shooters all told. Th« first and second prises—a silver cup and » canteen of cutlery—were presented by the Colonial Ammunition Co., and the tbird prize, a siuLvinsc set, by Messrs Ashby Bergh and Co., .Ltd. Nine teams entered with seven. men in a team At ibe commencement of the shoot m strong easterly wind was blowing, causing the . birds to rise rapidly. The atmosphere was hazv. and this added to the difficulties of the shooters. Prior to the teams' match, six-bird and nine-bird sweepstakes -were held. Ac the end of the sixth round the relative scores in the competition were as follows:. Christchurch No. 1 Sfc birds, Bllesmere 35, North Canterbury 85, Springston No. 1 35, Lyttelton -85, Methven 34, Christchurch No. 2 SO, Springston No. 2 29, Tai Tapu 28. Six "rounds later the positions wore still close—Lyttelton 55, North Canterbury 54, Methven 52, Christchuroh No. 1 51, Elle<mere 50, Springston No. 1 50, Tai Tapu 47, Christchurch No. 2 45, and Springstion Xo. 2 43. Presenting the prizes, Mr D. F. Dennehy, piesident of tho Christchurch Gun \Club, said that • the Lyttelton Club's win was thoroughly deserved The contest had been a strenuous one and every shooter, as was the custom, had fought fairly. Christchurch No. 1, the runner*-up, had made the oontesfc Veen and they, also, deserved their place. On . behalf of the Colonial Ammunition Company, Mr J. Donnelly said that throughout the shoot the team spirit had "prevailed. Competitions of such & nature were .of gTeat value to alt clubs, for the reason that they brought the shooters into friendly rvmpotition and gave them practice. Mr W. Whitford, for the Lyttelton Club, Mr Uennehy for the Christchurch No. 1 Club, «*d Mr J. Skilling for the North Canterbury Club, accepted the prizes and replied suitably.
