OBITUARY.
MR ROBERT ARTHUR STOKES. Jn the death of Mr Kobcvt Arthur o ves, which occurred at St. George's Hospital, after a short illness, Kew -Brightou loses one of its most respected residi.Mit.s. Mr Stokes w;is born at Papanui in 1875. He was a S[)11 of Mr and Mrs William 'Ward Stokes, who arrived in New Zealand by the Randolph, one of ••he lirst Four Ships, lie was educated at the limuru Main School, and settled in J\ew -Brighton in 11)10, opening up a business as a pastrycook. Mr Stokes was closely associated with tlio progress of New Brighton. He joined the Volunteer ITire Brigade iu 1914, and in 1«J21 was elected superin-tendent-—a position which he held until the time of his death, lie was a past president and life member of the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades' Association. lie "was. a prominent bowler, having been at one lime president of the 2sie\v Brighton O'.ub. JUr Stokes ivas for many years a member of tho -New Brighton Borough Council, and was chairman of the lighting Committee at the time of his death. He leaves a widow and one son, Mi Robert Stokes. The funeral, which took the form of a Fire Brigade funeral, left the Ne\T Brighton Fire Brigade Station yesterday afternoon, for the Bromley Cemetery, \vhpre the Rev. T. M. Curnow conducted the service at the graveside. The long cortege was headed by two fire engines, which carried many beantiful wreaths. The Fire Brigades represented included Now Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Christchurch Central Brigade, Sumner Volunteer Brigade, Kaiapoi Volunteer Brigade, Rangidra Volunteer Brigade, Addington Railwny Brigade, Christchurch Railway Brigade, Lyttclton Volunteer Fire Brigade.
The chief mourners were Mrs R. A. Stokes, Mr Robert. Stokes, Mr O. 11. Stokes, Mrs J. Goodman, Mrs A. Wells, arid Miss Goodman. The pall-bearers wcro Deputy-Supt. Stokes, See. J. F.
