ST. JOHN AMBULANCE APPEAL.
TO THE EDITOR Or THE PRESS Sir,'—One cannot help wondering whether those responsible for the St. John Ambulance appeal quite realise how bad the times are through which wo are at present passing, as if they did I venture to think the appeal would have been postponed till things are better, which will not be for a while yet. At present tho lack of employment is as serious as ever, reduction in wages and salaries has begun, dividends have been and are being reduced, trade generally is very unsatisfactory, and in addition to these things the community is approaching a season when expenses are always heavier, and rightly so, than at any other time in the year. Could there be a worse time than the present for launching this appeal! That there is not much interest taken in it is evidenced by the poor attendance at Tuesday's meeting. I am writing nothing about the object of the appeal, although I could say a good deal about this, but merely to suggest to those responsible for it that the campaign be deferred as in my judgment there is little hope of getting the money.—Yours, etc., CHAS. BEAN. Jfovember 27th, 1930. [When this letter was submitted to Mr C. J. Treleaven, secretary of the Centre, he said that the matter of commencing the St. John Ambulance Association's appeal rested with the appeal committee, which consists of public and business men associated with the committee of the Association. The eomm.ttee hoped that citizens will recognise the necessity and urgency of the appeal, because the work is such that it must bo kept going.!
