TIDES. It will be high tide at 11.19 a.m., and at 11.45 p.m. on the beach to-day, and at noon in the river. To-morrow: Midday and 1-3.28 a.m. Monday, on the beach, and 1-.46 p.m. and 1.12 a.m., Monday, in the river. Birthday Party. Mr and Mrs A. M. Chivers gave a very enjoyable party in honour of their grand-daughter (Miss Joan McKcows) on her tenth birthday. A largo number of young folk were entertained at a delightful tea, after which games, recitations, and competitions occupied a. merry evening. Several recitations acd musical items were contributed. Those present included Joan MtKeown. Eunice Hudson, Betty Napper, Olive Coddington, June Pike, Peggy Sapper, Betty Nesbitt, Marie Nesbitt, Haze! Henderson, Joan Hayward, Margaret Coddington, Noeline Nesbitt, Joan Burtt, Douglas Linton, Terence McKeown, Eoy Heuderson, Kenneth Linton, Gordon Henderson, Jim Nesbitt, Brian McKeown, Royce Queree, Louis Hudson, Jack Queree, and others.
Outdoor Bifle Club, 'The New Brighton Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club will open its summer season this afternoon. Although the range la not quite completed, it will bo possible to shoot on it thia afternoon. A good programme haa been drawn up for the season, and the prize list haa been added to.
Bowling. The following is a progrese report of the results of the second round of the New Brighton Bowling Club's competitions: — Singioß. J. Stokes beat Watson. Muirson beat L. Lawrence. Middlcton beat Chapman. Bisman beat Cooke. Glasgow beat Hollo way. H. Bishop beat Barrett. Doubles. Chapman and 11. Bishop beat Barrett and Muirson. Cooke and Dean beat Ardem and J, Stokes.
Rinks. I^'c.id's rink beat 11. Bishop's rial;. Besley's rink beat J. Stokes's rink. Shaw's rhik had the bye. A New Brighton colts' rink, consisthag of Messrs Summerfielcl, Howard, Corliss, and Watson (s), defeated a similar team from the Shirley Club, by to 18. This game was for the Colts' Shield. This afternoon's games will be with Shirlev. Pleasant Point Club. The Pleasant Point Yacht and Boat Club will hold its second race of the Ostler Cup series during tho week-end. Cycle Club. 1.0. G.T. The annual juvenile sports of the 1.0. G.T. will be held at tho New Brighton racecourse this afternoon. A good programme of races has been arranged for the children. Miniature Golf. The opening of the New Brighton Midget Golf links will take place this afternoon. Card Evenings. The weekly card evening in aid of tho Kindergarten waa held on Thursday night at tho home of Mr and Mrs A. H. Burtt, Brighton terrace. The prizewinners were Mr A. Dorn, Mrs H. Henderson, Mr C. Gudge and Mr and Mrs J. H. Coddington. An amusing competition was held. This was won by Mrs C. Gudge. Tho New Brighton Croquet Club hold an enjoyable and well attended card evening in the pavilion on Thursday. Prises were won by Mesdames B. Cockle, F. Jugson, and B. SmitH. Miss J. Luxton won tho special prize.
South Brighton Surf Club. A committee meeting of the New j Brighton Surf Club w|as held to discuss alterations to certain rules. Discussion was taken in committee. Beach Patrols. Tho Mayor of New Brighton (Mr J. H. Shaw) intends to call a meeting during the coming week, to discuss tho question of providing beach patrols. Boy Scouts. At the annual meeting of the New Brighton Scouts the action of the Mayor, in giving permission to the Runanga .Ladies' Guild, to use the Club House during the Christmas holidays, was approved. It was arranged that everything possible should be done to ensure the comfort of the ladies during their short stay in New Brighton. The Woolston Boy Scouts will bo camping in the Eawhiti Domain during the Christmas holidays.
Gift Evenings. At her homo in Glandovey road, Miss Ruby Wright gave a party in the form of a gift evening, in honour of Miss Aileen Bishop, of New Brighton, whose marriage takes place shortly. Those present were Mesdames G. A. Wright, A. Bishop, M. Gould, McCree, Misses Aileen, and lima Bishop, Bene and Molly Dili, Bene Wright, Schneideman, Bosio Schneideman, Merle Miller, Margaret Carrick, and Peggy and Ruby Wright. Miss Aileen Bishop was also honoured at the home of Mrs S. Schneideman, Dean's avenue, when a "cup and saucer afternoon" was held. Those present included Mesdames H. Bishop, M. Gould, Roberts, S. Schneideman, Misses Aileen Bishop, lima Bishop, R. Schneideman, Rene Wright, Ruby Wright, Gwen and Yvonne Merfield, and Rosie Schneideman. British Sailors' Society. The monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the British Sailors' Society was held at the residence of the president (Mrs H. Bishop), there being a good attendance. It was reported that the Governor-General had visited the Institute at Lyttelton and had complimented the Board and the members of the various Ladies' Guilds upon their work in making provision for the sailors in port. Athletics. Members of the New Brighton Amateur Athletic Club performed very creditably at this week's evening meeting at Lancaster Park. The relay team, which consisted of Messrs F. Gallacher,

G. Goring presided, and led the dej votions. J A motion of sympathy with Mr i£. ; A. M. Leaver and relatives, in the death j of Mrs Leaver, vras passed. | It was decided to hold tho annual I meeting and to elect the officers, in February. After some discussion, it was decided to have a combined L.T.L. and | Cradle Roll picnic in the Domain on | December Oth, at 2.30 p.m. Members ] promised to bring refreshments, and | prizes for the children. Mrs Lawson j gave a report of the L.T.L. work, which ] showed progress. A splendid report was J received from the Xorth Brighton "Y" j branch, much good work having been ! accomplished during the year. Mrs A. j Plorance was appointed superintendent I or' thi3 department. Mrs A. H. Henry, j lha retiring superintendent, was thanked | for the interest she; had taken in the J work. Two children were added to the Cradle Roll. The next prayer meeting is to be held at Mrs Goring's residence.
North Beach Surf Club. The North Beach Surf Olub is considering the question of having a more distinct club costume and badge. So far nothing definite has been decided upon. At the last meeting of the club's executive a suggestion was made that aparl from the costume and badge for competition purposes, a more simple type of badge might be designed, which every member of the Club will be expected to have attached to his or her costume. If this suggestion is brought into effect ;t will prevent non-members from using tho pavilion when they have no right to do so. The sun-bathing enclosure, for the use of the Club members, has become very dilapidated, owing chiefly to the sanddrift. The Club intends to have the fences repaired, and the sand inside tha enclosure levelled, the latter to be done by the members. This should improve the appearance of the foreshore.
Vandalism. Mrs H. Roscoe, of Saltairo street, lias hod a number of very choice poppy and lilac flowers stolen from her garden. The matter has been reported to the police. Apart from the loss of the flower? considerable damage has been done to the young lilac trees. North Beach. School Tennis. The North Beach School's tennis .team met Fendalton School's team in tho third round o£ the primary schools 1 competition. The North Beach team won by 7 sots to 3. Anglican Church. The Anglican service on tho nrsfc Sunday in December, is to take tho form of a Memorial service to the lato Mrs E. A. M. Leaver. The vicar of St. Faith's, New Brighton, will take tbo service.
Euchre Party. The euehre evenings in aid of the Peaco Memorial Hall funds continue to be well attended. At the last party the prizes wero won by Miss E. Mortimer and Mr Hay. Personal. Mrs T. Hughes (Feilding), who has been visiting her brother, Mr E. A. M. Leaver, of Osborne terrace, has returned north. Mrs W. S. Bussell (Osborno terrace) ha 3 returned from Waimate, where .she went on account of the death of her father. Miss Hilda' Williams (Bowhill road), who has been ou the nursing staff of St. George's Hospital, will join the staff of the Christchurch Hospital oil December 4th. Mrs L. P. Williams has returned from a short holiday in Timaru.
