♦ PICNICS. The iioatiicote Valley School will hold their annual picnic at Corsair Bay to-day, and the Mt. Pleasant School picnic will be held at Diamond HaAour. New Maternity Ward. Borough Council workmen were engaged this week in forming a roadway and approach to the site for the new Maternity Ward at West Lyttelton.The contract for the ward has been let, and it is expected that the work will commence at an early date. Sailing. The lirst trial race to select a boat and crew to represent Canterbury in the Sanders Cup contest at Dunedin will be held at Lyttelton this afternoon. It is now expected that only the three Lyttelton boats, Colleen, Irene, and Usher will take part. The second trial race for the selection of a. erew to represent Lyttelton in tho Cornwell Cup race will be held this afternoon. Personal. There was a large attendance of members at the Te Whaka Tennis Club's courts on Thursday, when a tennis party was held in honour of Miss A. McAuliffe, who is leaving to live in Auckland, louring the afternoon a progressive tournament was held, the winner being Miss J. Shayle-George. At the conclusion of the tournament Mr J. T. O. Stephens expressed regret that the club was losing such a keen player and good worker as Miss McAuliffe had always proved herself, and on behalf of the members presented her with a xylonite toilet set as a small memento of the happy times blio had spent at Te Whaka courts. Miss McAuliffe returned thanks.
