j ACCIDENT ON WEST COAST. j . j ('speciai. vo isb passs.) GREYMOUTH. November 27. A section of th? roof of the ''apg.roa mine fell in to-day, causing the Heath of Edward Thomas Kirwan, aged 37 years, and injuring William O'Grady. The accident occurred at 3.15 p.m.) shortly before knock-off time. The two men. who were by themselves, were working in the aerial section of the mine, when about seventeen feet of the roof collapsed, burying both men. When extricated, Kirwan was dead, a piece of falling timber having fractured his skull, and broken his neck. O'Grady received minor spina] and leg injuries, and was suffering from shock. IXr. Bennett was summoned, and h© did what was possible. The task of takine O'Gradv down the level proved extremely difficult, the stretcher-bearers having to negotiate a slip, which had been made awkward by recent rain. He was removed to the Grey Hospital, where his condition to-nighty was stated, to be satisfactory. Kirwan, who was a native of Reefton, is survived by his mother, a resident of Christchurch, two brothers — Robert and John —both well-known footballers and two sisters, one or whom is Mrs A. O'Donnell. wife of the manager of the Paparoa mine. j An inquest will be held. ■
