Hearing a crash of glass at the front door of her home in Burnley, a suburb of the city, in the early morning, Mrs Whitington called out to her husband, "Quick, dad, there's somebody trying to break in. He has a revolver.'' Her husband, William Whitington, Reized his son's gun, and fired through the leadlights. The unknown man fell dead at the front doorstep. He had no revolver or house-breaking implements in his possession. His body awaits identification.
