On Monday, 23 scholars sat for tljo proficiency examination, including ono from Blenheim. Nine will sit for Publie Service entrance certificates, and one will sit for matriculation, in December. Mr James Boyd, (county chairman), rt turned to Kaikoura on Sunday, aiter inspecting land at Kekerangu, in company with Mr James Fulton. Two properties have been offered to tho Government for closer settlement. Mr JJoyd arrived in Christchurch last evening to attend the meeting of the Hospital Board, and will probably proceed io Wellington on county business. Miss, A. E. Flower will give 'an organ recital at St. Paul's Church, th© proceeds being in aid of tho church garden fund. An excellent programme has bpen arranged, The annual sale of work in connexion with the Anglican Church will take place in December. The ladies have held various functions to raise funds for the purchase of goods for the stalls, and many novelties are to be introduced for the amusement of patrons. Ihe weather conditions are most unseasonable. There has been little growth in the gardens. Shearing has been hampered bv the wet weather. The electric lighting account has given the Council some concern for some time past. Tn 1927 a loan was raised to reimburse tho county fund of £1255, and now there is a debit in the vicinity of £2OOO. The county chairman intends to move a motioin relative to the question at the December meeting of the Council.
Owing {o unfavourable weather conditions there has been little deep-sea fishing for the pn.st nine days, but those trawling for flat fish have secured Moderate catches.
HA WARDEN. Members of the congregation of the? Horslev Downs Anglican Church met at the residence of Mrs Lance to bid Mrs and Miss Lance fa reave 11 on the eve of their departure for Christchurch. The Kev. Claud Brown, speaking on behalf of the parishioners, said that Mrs Lance had been a tower of strength to the Church over a long period of years. Both she and Miss Lance had always given their services cheerfully. He expressed the great regret of the congregation that they were leaving, and made them a small presentation as a token of the esteem of their fellow parishioners. Mrs Lance, in replying, expressed her sorrow at severing her connexion with the church, which she had attended for so long. She mentioned the friendly spirit which had always existed among members of tb® little church and hoped that the spirit would ever continue.
A meeting of the Hawarden School Committee was held -when the chairman (Mr W. L. Wright) presided. The chairman reported on the visit to tho 6chool of the Director for Education and the Assistant-Director,. who : had gone into the question of fitting up Woodwork and cookery rooms and the equipment of the science laboratory in connexion with the Secondary Department. It is hoped that both "these departments will be in going order by the beginning of next school year. The committee fixed the date of the annual school picnic to Corsair Bay for December 10th, whei'f a special train will be run. Arrangements were reported to be in hand for the usual break-up fancy dress ball and concert. OMIHI. The annual church parade of tije Loyal Oinihi Lodge took place at tho Omihi Hall on Sunday, the Revs. Mr Parker, Mr Raven, and Mr Hawkins officiating. Owing to the inclement weather and the. fact that tho Leithfield Lodge's church parade was to have been the same day, there were 110 members from other Lodges. The collection, amounting to £1 19s 9d, is to go to the Blind lleturned Soldiers' Institute. The district officers paid the Loyal Omihi Lodge a visit at its quarterly meeting. They were accompanied by visitors from the Loyai Rangiora, Leithfield, Cust, and Ashburton Lodges, and were heartily welcomed by the N.G., Bro. J. Wyllie. Particularly interesting speeches were given by the D.G.M. and tho District Secretary on tho Order, and its operations throughout New Zealand. All the speakers congratulated the Lodge on its numerous young members, and the way in which the business was carried out. The new officers were elected and installed by the D.G.M. as follows: 1.P.N.G., Bro. J. Wyllie; N.G., Bro. J. Staclihouse; V.G., Bro. It. Rowney; elective secretary, Bro. L Russell; auditors, P.G.'s Bros. D. Croft and J. Harris; supporters to N.G., P.G. Bro. E. Doak and Bro. R. Alexander; supporters to V.G., Bros. J. Croft and C. J. Stackhouse; guardian, Bro. R. Inch. SPRINGSTON. The closing social of the Girls' Sunshine Club was held in the Public Hall at Springs ton, when there was a, good attendance. Mrs A. C. Barr (subleader) presided over the gathering. Vocal solos were given by Misses Ruby Blakemore and Muriel Mounce, a pianoforte solo by Miss Thecla Riordan, a vocal duet by Mrs J. W. Marshall and Miss Muriel Mounce, a violin solo by Miss K. McLaren, a violin duet by Misses K. and M. McLaren, a cornet and pianoforte duet by Miss N. lieinls.ch and Mr H.. Mcintosh, a violin and piano duet by Misses M. McLaren and N. Heinisch, recitations by Miss VHewitt, Messrs N. Bissett and D. Hewitt, and a humorous sketch by Misses M. Riordan, N. Heinisch, M. Mounce, J- Tod, V. Thoma.s, and I. Thomas. Dancing and games were also enjoyed. The accompaniments were played by Mesdames Marshall, Riordan, Howarth, Emerson, and Misses N. Heinisch and M. Riordan and I. Mutton. Miss V. Hewitt, on behalf of the Sunshine Club, thanked Mrs Barr for the time she had spent with the girls and the interest she had-taken in the club. Miss Muriel Mounce thanked all who had helped to make the evening successful. Mr H. Mcintosh, on behalf of the Young Men's' Club, expressed his appreciation for the pleasant evening they had spent. Supper was dispensed by the girls. A- " Monte Carlo waltz was won by Misses T.. Blakemore and \. Riordan, and a . competition .by Miss M. Grenslade and Mir W. Bissett.
SOUTH MALVERN. Ibe final meeting in connexion with the Spring Show, held under ,the auspices of tin* 5 Glpintunnol. Anclinnri and Presbyterian Churches, was held in the Glentunnel library, Mr Gil-.-.mour being in the chair. Among those present were; Mesdames John Deans, James Deans, W'. Gilmour, E. Harper, J. Jewell, G. J). Marsh, Misses AVeastell, and Marsh, Messrs 3as. Deans, G. B. Starkv, and E. Charles. The secretary that, the recent shjiw had resulted in a net profit of ijt6, this amount being divided equally between the two churches. The chairman, in expressing satisfaction at the very gratifying success : of the show, moved a hearty vote of thanks to all who had in any way assisted to make the function such a complete success. He especially thanked-, the Ladies' Guild for its untiring work, not only at the show, bat throughout the year. To the secretary and treasurer • (Miss Weastell), he expressed the thanks and .congratulations of the officials of both churches for the energetic and capable manner in which she had carried out her arduous duties. The annual examination for proficiency certificates was conducted in the Glentunnel School on 'Monday. DARFIELD. The Rev. Thco. Patersori, M.A., 8.D., presided over the annual meeting of the Darfield congregation of the Halkett Presbyterian Church. The treasurer (Air D. Mulholland) presented the balance-sheet, which showed a. substantial credit for the year. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: General Committee, Messrs S. Symo, \V. W. Mulholland, G. Masterton, J. Syme, R. Anderson, G. S. Donald, and Dr. G. E. Heid; secretary, Mr Jas. Reid; treasurer, Mr D. Mulholland. After the meeting a "bring and buy," organised by the mombers of the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, was held, and good business was done. During the evening, songs were given by Mrs W. W. Mulholiand, Misses Bates, and H. and D. Cullen, and Messrs H. H. Barre, R. Bulmer, \V. T. Cooke, and Douglas. Mrs A. S. Moffatt presided over the monthly meeting of the Darfield branch of the Mothers' Union. There was a large attendance, including several members of the Springfield branch. The Rev A. S. Moffatt gave a very interesting address. Arrangements were made for a party from Christchurch to give a concert in aid of funds for St. Saviour's Orphanage. It was decided that tho next meeting bo held in ' Februarv.
LEESTON. The final of the junior championship, for a trophy presented by Mr J. Lloyd, was played on the Ellesmere golf links on Saturday, befween W. H. Cartwright and A. J. Henderson, the former winning by two up and one to play. Mr and Mrs A. >T. In-wood, of Southleft yesteroay to spend a fortnijJTit at Hanmpr. Tlio Ellesmere Cemetery Board held a special meeting to consider the tenders for the builcfing of a meeting room adjoining the sexton's house. The prices ranged up to £l5O. The meral>ers considered that at. the. present stage they were not justified in spending the amount necessary to provide a suitable building, and it was decided to defer the matter for a year. Prior to her marriage, Miss Edna Clausen was entertained at a gift evening in St. JoTiii's parish hall. Miss Alexander provided the music for dancing, while Mr It. H. Ford was M.C. Songs were given by Mrs Ford and Miss B. Townshend, and a guitar duet by Mrsses Paynier and Langdale. A large number of gifts for the guest's nomo were received, and thesa were acknowledged by Mr C. J. Jackman and by.Mr P. B. Clausen.
