SUMNER BROWNIES.
A very pretty ceremony was held yesterday on the lawn of the Presbyterian Church grounds at Sumner, where a number of Sumner Brownies took the "flying up" ceremony to Guides. A "fairy messenger" from the Guides found the eligible Brownies asleep in a ring. Calling them, to wake them, the messenger invited them to leave their "Brown Owl" and become "Guides." At first they_ declined, but finally accepted the invitation. and were welcomed into a 'horse-shoe" of Guides with their colours flying above tliein. Here they saluted the captain (Miss F. Alien), and were each presented to the District" Commissioner (Miss Mcllraith), who pinned on their wings. Thus qualified, they took their places between fully qualified Guides, and at the conclusion of the ceremony sang the National Anthem. This interesting function was attended by all the Sumner members ot the movement, and was keenly followed by the following ladies of the local committee. —Mesdames W. H. Nicholson, Fountain Barber, H. E. Crawshaw, T. Cook, C. S. Booth, and U. Gray. Th© other officers present were Mrs R. H. Henley, Brown Owl, of the Sumner Brownies, and Miss E. Barber. Tawny Owl. Mrs Gray presented Miss Mcllraith with a beautiful bouquet of roses, and the Guides afterwards entertained those present to an afternoon tea.
