FIRES.
A MASTERTON OUTBREAK. (P*K«S A.'iOCIATXOK TELE." i \U. > MASTERTON, November 24. A spectacular fire occurred to-night ■when a large two-storey building standing behind the shop of Scoullar arid Co.'s furniture warehouse in Queen itrcet, and used by the firm for storage and packing purposes, was discovered to be on lire by a brigadesman irom the fire station, which is adjacent. The whole of the interior of the building was a roaring inferno -when the Brigade tackled the outbreak, but within half an hour it was under control. The Brigade presented the flames from spreading to the adjoining building on tho south side, partly occupied bv T. Wagg, garage proprietor, and W. G. Berry, gramophone dealer. SCHOOL DESTROYED. (TRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) WELLINGTON, November 24. The Whiteinan's Valley school, Upper Hutt district, was totally destroyed by lire ou Sunday morning. An elderly woman, Mrs Allen, mother of the schoolmistress, and a .small grandson, who wore sleeping in the living quarters attached to tho school, narrowly escaped death, having to leave by a window in tiieir night attire. The flames were breaking through the walls when her grandson awakened her. The schoolmistress was away at the time in hospital.
