TROPHY CONTESTS
INTER-PROVINCIAL FIXTURES-
OPPOSITION to' proposals. On the grounds that competition for the Anthony Wilding Memorial Shield and the Kathleen Nunuelcy Challenge Casket need 3 stimulating, a comprehensive scheme designed for that purpose, and including many changes, is to be discussed by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Council this week, and it was before the meeting of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association last night. That body decided that it was not a satisfactory scheme, and decided to oppose it. Scheme Outlined. A letter from the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association stated that the Management Committee of the Association would propose that tho regulations for the Anthony Wilding Memorial Challenge Shield competition and the Kathleen Nunneley Challenge Casket competition he amended so that; (1) Those ttio competitions be controlled and managed by the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. (2) That thut Association arrange the time and place for matches and write and receive challenges for the respective competitions for each yeur. (3) That the mutches in both competitions be played during one fixed week in each year.
(4) That for the purpose of these competitions the area under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association be divided into nine groups, as follows: North Auckland. Thames Valley, and Waikato; Auckland; Taranaki, Wanganui, and Manawatu; Poverty Bay, Kast Coast, Hawke's Bay, and Wairarapa; Wellington; Marlborough. Nelson, and West Coast; Canterbury; South Canterbury, North Otago, Otago, and Southland; M aori Association. Opposition Explained. Mr Goss pointed out that the proposed divisions would provide for five in the Nor;h Island, three in the South Island, and a Maori Association. Tho competition had been a great source of revenue to the Association in Canterbury, and he thought it would be a pity if the competitions were to be given into the control of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association. The Management Committee of the Canterbury Association was opposed to the proposal, as the scheme for a week's tennis for such competitions was too cumbersome and altogether impracticable. Mr Browning said that tho Canterbury Association had entered teams for the competitions referred to, and at times because it thought it its duty to do so. He agreed that the proposal was a very unwieldy one, and would do local Associations more harm than good. A motion that the Canterbury Association oppose the scheme when it is presented to the Council was carried unanimously. BALCAIRN V. ASHLEY. (Played at Ashley, Balcairn names first).
