ST. ALBANS FETE.
TUG-OF-WAR COMPETITION. The St. Albans fete-to raiso funds to pro-, vide for the construction of a swimming bath on the site given by the City Council, "was continued on Saturday afternoon and-evening. There was . a good attendance on both occasions. which, in some measure compensated for the bad weather of the previous two nights. The president of the Baths Committee, Mr R. B. Dalley, said that the return from the fete would not, as a result of the bad weather on the first two nights, be as large as.had been expected, but by opening .again on Monday night it was hoped to gain some further revenue. The actual financial result of the fete wolud not be known for a few dayß until all returns were in. The chief attraction of the afternoon, apart from the side-shows, which were many and varied, was a demonstration oi axemanship and sawing by Messrs M. Doody and B. Garlick. In the : evening this was continued, and a friendly contest was held, while the finals of the tug-of-war competition took place. The Woolston Band was in attendance. The tug-of-war competition aroused keen interest, being very well conducted, whilo some of the teams, especially the Lyttelton heavy-weights, demonstrated that there was , a lot of . skill in the. sport, and that mero weight was not the only, factor in securing a Finals of Tug-of-War.
