ashburton. NEW CATHOLIC CHURCH. Good progress is being made with the construction of the new Catholic Church 'jch is being erected in brick, and is estimated to cost fII,BBO. The four outer wa Is will soon be completed. It is estimated that the whole work will bo completed about June, 1931, and although no arrangements have yet been it is probable that the church will be dedicated, and opened by his lordship Bishop M. J. Brodie. of Christchurch. Raijgitata Bridge Tire Protection. The Public Works Department has approved of the plans for a fire protection scheme for the Rarigitata traffic ijridge, and it is expected that tenders *wll soon be called for the work. A concrete reservoir to hold 2000 gallons *vill be erected at the top of the terrace at the Ashburton end of the bridge, and from this a three-inch pipe will be run across the bridge, and will contain 21 valves. The cost will be shared by the Ashburton and Geraldino County Coun- j oils, and the Main Highways Board. Broadcast Concert. An exceptionally good programme waa ; presented by the Ashburton Silver Band, '■ | in his Majesty's Theatre last evening, I j when the concert was broadcasted. The 1 band, under the baton of Mr 11. J. T, Osborne, was in good form, and its programme was supplemented with songs by Mesdames R. L. Stephenson, and F. J. Chambers, and Mr J. C. Thompson, an elocutionary item by Miss Nancy Bishop, and a xylophone solo by Mr 11. Macdonald. The proceeds will be dovoted to tho band's uniform fund. White Ribboncrs* Picnic. Under the auspices of the Ashburton branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, the Little White Ribboners' Day was celebrated in the Domain on Saturday, when thoro was a large gathering of parents and children. Tho children indulged in games, and each was presented with a gift by Father Christmas. Mrs A. J. Petrie addressed the parents. Sailors' Society AppeaJ. METHVEN. The monthly sitting of the Methven Magistrate's Court was held before Mr C. It. Orr Walker, S.M., when the following police cases were dealt'with: A youth whose name the Magistrate ordered to bo suppressed was charged W | j *i of Defendant pleaded guilty and was convicted and admitted to probation for one year and ordered to make restitution of tho £5 which was stolen. Lionel William Murphy was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order. He was convicted and fined £2 and costs, in default_ three days' imprisonment. D'arcy F. Kilworth was charged with failing to observe the offside rule under the Motor Regulations, 1928. Defendant pleaded guilty and was convicted and ■?." , ill, d costs. The Inspector of Stock (Mr J. W. Smith) proceeded against Charles Stockdill, Methven, for having exposed lice-infected sheep for sale in the Methven Saleyards on September 18t.h. There was no appearonco of defendant, who was convicted and fined 20s and costs. Arising out of a motor accident, whereby Rachel Hlighley was killed on the Cairnbrae-Methven road on May 22nd last. Lawrence Thomas McKendry was charged with driving a motor-car in a manner which, having regard to all the circumstances of £he case, was dangerous to the public. He was further charged with that, being the driver of a motor-car, he did, when overtaking another vehicle, fail to paws on the right sido of the overtaken vehicle. Defendant, who was represented by Mr J. W. M. Dart pleaded not guilty to both charges. Before any evidence was submitted Mr Dart advanced the plea of autrefois acquit, pointing out that defendant had already been dealt with on a similar charge at the last Supreme Court sittings in Christchurch and had been acquitted by tho jury. Defendant, having already been acquitted on a similar charge, tho charge now before the Court should be withdrawn The Magistrate said that ha could not agree with Mr Dart's opinion and the case was proceeded with. Evidence on similar lines to that heard nt the previous hearing was given bv Dr. W. H D McKee. Mrs M. J. Highlev, John Moriarty, nnd Constable Robertson Defendant also gave evidence. After reviewing the case at length, the Magistrate convicted and fined defendant £lO and costs and ordered that his driver's license be cancelled and that he he prohibited from renewing it till after January Ist. 1932 Defendant was allowed one month in which to pay. The second charge, endeavouring to pass on the wrong side, was withdrawn by the police. Judgment by default was given in the following cases: —Cookson Bros. (Mr Dart) v. Reginald Hamilton, claim £23 13s 2d and costs; J. F Newman (Mr Dart) r. Geo Davis, claim £3 and eo*ts. No order was made in the judgment summons in the easts. Strange and Co. v. P Sullivan, claim £5 lis lid.

LISMORE. A card party and a dance were held in the Lismore School on Friday evening, .tp raise funds 'for tho Anglican Church. There was a'good attendance, numerous visitors, being present from Hinds and Maronan;- The prizes for bTidge wore won by.ollr and Mrs G. Scales, while the consolation prizes went to Miss Fleming and Mr D. Blunden. The euchre tournament was won by Miss R. Smith and Mr 11. Ashton. The consolation prizes went to Mrs J. Howdcn and Mr C. Corbett. The prizes wore given by Mrs T. Mulligan. After supper a dance was held, music being supplied by Miss V. Addis and Mr H. Addis. Mr A. Fagan supplied an extra. This cake, given by Mrs Coward, for weight-guessing, was won by Miss E. Mnidcns. Further rain fell at Lismore on Friday afternoon, nnd the conditions were much colder. The rain was welcome. The district is looking particularly well at present, and the wheat crops give promise of good yields. A few farmers have commenced shearing, but shearing is not yet general in the district. EAKAIA. The entries reeeived for tho Rakaia Athletic and Cycling Club's sports are much larger than those of last year, eighty entries having been made for the running and cycling events, compared with sixty last year. For the Connolly Challenge Cup for the primary school's relay race, eight entries have been received from the schools of the district.
