SUMNER SEWERAGE.
TROUBLE NOW OVERCOME. As a result of the scouring of the beach some., months ago, a serious dislocation of I the Sumner sewerage system . occurred. The trouble has now been completely remedied, and the new system was inspected by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson) and. Councillors on -Saturd afternoon. Mr Cheshire (electrical engineer) explained the working of the new system. The sewage, he said, was, received from five septic tanks into" ft receiving chamber, whence it felT into a newly-constructed tank through a valve, and from there waß pumped out to deep water. Mr Cheshire also explained the manner in which the plant worked. A 7 h.p. electric motor worked automatically, and, a certain level in the tank having been attained, the pump became automatically primed and the power switched on. Any danger of offensive smell was overcome by a hermetically sealed chamber, and the passing of the cable used in connexion with the operation of the pump through grease-filled pipes. Every precaution apainst a breakdown of the motor had been taken, and provision had been made for frequent inspection. Councillors expressed themselves as fully satisfied with the work carried out, and the Mayor said that the trouble had now been entirely overcome. All the rock and broken concrete now on the beach would be used in the construction of the wall, and a start would be made early next week. He expressed his pleasure that there was such a large ' representation of Councillors that afternoon, and said that they were greatly indebted to the executive officers for their attendance n" l detailed information. .
