Guests at the New Brighton Cafe include Mr and Mrs Gillanders and child (Domett), Mr and Mrs Dalton (Metliven), Mr and Mrs Milner, Miss M. Murray, Mrs Alpine, Mrs Bremner and family, and Mr and Mrs Thoruhill Cooper. Band Concert. The New Brighton Municipal Band, under the conductorship of Mr J. Nuttall, will give a programme of music from the rotunda at three o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Fire Alarms. The New Brighton Volunteer i'ire Brigade responded to two calls during the week. Burning rubbish in a washhouse in Mafeking street caused the first alarm, and the fire was speedily extinguished. The second call was received on Wednesday morning, when a workman engaged in burning rubbish on the Rawhiti Domain lost control of the firo and received timely assistance. Birthday Party. Mr and Mrs T. S. Duncan gave an enjoyable dance in the Masonic Hal] on the occasion of the coming-of-age of their son, Alexander. Music was supplied by Stokes' Orchestra. Miss Jessie Duncan arid Mrs f l . Meachall contributed items, and an extra was played by Mr G. Cook. The duties of M.C. were carried out by Mr J. Duncan. Card Evening. At a flag evening held in connexion with the New Brighton Croquet Club Mcsdames K. Stringer, .Slater, and Mr l'\ Whiteley were prize-winners, while a special prize, presented by Mrs W. Whiteley, was won by Mr Castile. The weekly card evening in aid of the kindergarten funds was held this week at the home of Mr and Mrs 11. Henderson, Sea View road, and was very successful. The prize-winners were Mrs Burtt, Mrs Weavers, Mr Chivers, Mrs Carmalt, and Mr J. McLaughlin. A competition was hold which was won by Mrs Chapman. Next week the card evening will be held at the home of Mr and Mth A. 11. Burtt, Brighton terrace.
Amateur Athletic Cluli. At the athletic contest hold at Lancaster Park on Tuesday evening last the New Brighton team, which consisted of .T. ilay (SBO yards), 11. Ij. [ Williams (440 yards'), F. iiallaclier (220 yards), and J. 1). Jorgensen >'22o yards') won the relay in good style. Miss V. Boyd distinguished herself by gaining second place in the JUO yards women's race. After winning her heat Miss Boyd was beaten by inches ouly in the llnal. Good promise was shown by other •contestants from the New Brighton Club. Another stage will be advanced next Tuesday, when tho club captain (Mr A. C. Boyd) may havu some older members entered for competition. Tennis. In the third round oJ' the Canterbury inter-club (J grade competitions the Nevr Brighton Club defeated Papanui by nine sets to seven. The club handicap singles are now b ing played, and F. Aldridge defeated A. Birch !»-S, and J. .Scott defeated J. llurrell 9-!2. In the primary schools' tu:niis tournament New Brighton defeated last year's holders of tho championship. North Beach, by 7 sets to 5. Surf Club. The opening of the New Brighton Surf Club will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2.".0 p.m., when Mr I). G. Sullivan, M.T\, Mr Shaw (Mayor), ami Captain Owles, president of the club, will speak. AVeatlier permitting, a lifesaving demonstration will be given, and afternoon tea will be served. " Methodist Church. The Management Committee of the Methodist Church is to be congratulated upon the success which attended its anniversary celebrations. On Sunday morning the service was conducted by the Rev, B. Mctson, and in the afternoon Mr I/awry presided over a primary demonstration which was given by Mrs Webb. Children trained by Mr S. Christian sang special hymns. Mr Christian conducted the j orchestra. • j
