BRIDGE NOTES.

HELP FOR PLAYERS AND beginners. (SPSCXAIXT WKITTErr TOR THE PRESS.) jUv WILLIAM SHACE.US.I The following is a hand which gave Z considerable food for thought. A dealt, no score.

Bidding. A. 1-. B „z----1 Heart INo Trump No bid 12 Spades 3 Clubs Xo bid N6 bid S, Spades No bid Xo bid 4 Clubs 4 Spades No bid No bid Ko bid Y did not raise 'his •partner on second round, as lie had already bid his hand on first round, and he preferred to sit, and then to double, if either heaita or clubs were bid any higher. Z felt sure of his partner's bid, of X no trump, being a sound one, so acted upon it to its full value. It was, of course, only a matter of deduction, but if he had not had faith in Y. the hand would have been plaved in 4 clubs, doubled, in which case A.B. would have made game, plus 50 for contract, rs on the play they would have just got home. Z made his 4 spades thus: —A led king of hearts, then queen of clubs, Y took and led ace of spades, followed by a small spade. Z took this '"trick and led 2 of diamonds, so was sure to make either his 10 or jack of diamonds on a later round. When Z bid to 4 spades he assumed that of his losing tricks, Y would make the heart and 3 tricks divided between diamond and spades. Thus he stood to lose 1 trick each in hearts and clubs, and I in either diamonds or trumps. Not quite accurate but sufficiently good reasoning to make his bid perfectly justifiable. Beginners. Try these two further hands, and next week I will again give bidding and score. Last week's bidding and score will bo found at the end of this article.

Z deals in both hands. Lust Week's Hindi. Ko. 1— 2 A Y B 1 Club "Double IC 2 Clubs 9 Hearts 8 Clubs 8 Hearts No bid No bid No bid B making 4 hearts in actuul play. N 0.-2 Z. A. Y. B. 1 Spiide No bid 2 Heart* No bid 2 No Tr'pa. No bid No bid No bid Sri making 4 No Trumpa in actual play. N.B.—Q of hearts should bo in B's hand, not k as stated.
