TURF GOSSIP. Reminder. The Ashburton .County liaciug Club's Spring Meeting will be held on December 6th. Xominations will close at 8 p.3i. on Monday. Phar Lap's Sister. "Mr A. F. Roberts, of Kaitunu, has decided to place Fortune's Wheel again in training, and this five-year-old mare *r"U shortly join Mrs J. Campbell's team at Riccarton. Fortune's Wheel is a sister to Phar Lap. She was raced onlv on three occasions as a two-year-oldj and then met with an accident, following which she was mated with Polazel. The result is a most attractive chestnut filly, and the youngster is to i'orm one of Roberts's draft for the Trentham sale. Fortune's Wheel disrjlaved marked ability to gallop before she* went out, and it will be interesting :o follow her future career. Weil-Bred.
One of the best grown foals at Hi Uoberts'a Kaituna Stud is a colt by Chief Ruler from First Blow, dam of Gaieony and Second Wind. The marc has been mated this season with. Xight Bald. Poolings at Kaituna. Recent foalings at the Kaituna Stud are ns follows: —To Night Raid: Peho, by Winkie, a filly; Pride of Martian, a colt; Lady Greyspear, a £olt; Mandane, a colt; Decollete, by Nafltiform, a filly; llerivale, by Paladin, a colt; to Pola:tel: Para, by Absurd, a colt; Lady "Brownspear, by Shambles, a filly; Mydora, by Sarto, a fllly; Petal Dust, by Martian, a filly; to Arrowsmith: Note, by Paper Money, a colt; to Silverado: Paper Eose, by Paper Money, ft filly; Amourette, by Psychology, a filly; to Weathervane: Snow Waif, by Bezonian, a colt; to Chief Buler: Desert Gold, a filly; First Blow, a colt; to Limond: Eulalie, a filly; to Tea Tray: Bonny Dawn (imp.) } a colt. Peho produced twin foals, a colt and a filly, but the former died. -Much-Discussed Afore. Lucky Light was this weelc sent tc Ifr A. P. Boberta's Kaituna Stud to be mated with Night Bald. Valuable Stake. The richest two-year-old event ever competed for in America was decided at the Belmont Park Meeting in September, when Jamestown triumphed in the Belmont Futurity Stakes, the winner's share coming to £19,920, the other place money being £IBOO for second, £IOOO for third, and £2OO for fourth. The event was decided over 35 yards short of seven furlongs. .Tamestown, carrying 9-4, covered the distance in lmin 20 3-ssec, which works out at lmin 23 S-Bsec for seven furlongs. The world's record time for the distance is lmin 20sec, which was established in England by First Edition TT. four years ago.
TROTTING NOTES.
A. Be minder. Nominations for the New Brighton Trotting Club's Meeting to bo held on December 13th close on Thursday next at 32 noon. I Exchanges. Mr J. R. Oorrigan, of Hawera, e£uuted a deal -with Messrs McKendrick Brothers when he took over Windshield in exchange for lilchora. Richore is * speedy pacer, who so far has not always given of his best on the raciug track, says a northern writer. He can sprint and stay, and may Boon score in his now colours. Windshield is a promising novice who has Bhown good form both on the track and in races up to ten furlongs. The sister to Free Advice should do well on a country sir- ■ ait.
Padlock to Race Again. | The Longburn trainer W. Hughes, j did not take the young trotter Caba!I lero north for the Auckland flxtiiro, and ! his only representative at Epsom is | Gang Awa'. Hughes stated that while I he was at Addington with Padlock the I horses at Longburn had an <"asy cime, | and the trotter was not forward enough :to tackle the Epsom opposition, says : the Auckland "Herald." Hughes lias not many horses in work at present. Luch Moigh being again turned out on j account of soreness. The promising filly Bingen Crest is als.o on the easv | list, having been put out of commiß- ! sion through a knee injury. In *P* tu : of his poor showing at Addington, I ml j lock is still in work, and, provided he : remains sound, he will be a competitor j at the Auckland Summer Meeting. | Unpopular. j Mile saddle races have not recoil ed | the support from owners and trainers that manY would have expected, and there is a growing tendency on the part, oi' clubs to delete them from their programmes. At the recent Meeting or' the New Zealand Metropolitan 'lrottin<* Club onlv one saddle race was included in " the programme, and i this contest did not evoke the interest j expected. In the Auckland district ! saddle racing has almost disappeared I from the programmes, and it would, ! perhaps, be in the interests of the public if the N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club followed suit. The fact that only seven acceptances have been received for the mile saddle race on the opening day of the Forbury Park Club's Meeting may cause this club to confine it 9 activities to harness racing in future. Forbury Park Favourite. Erin's Fortune did not race particularly well at the recent Meeting at Addington, but her form was good enough to suggest that she would ha\e a royal chance in the somewhat weaker field that she has yet to meet at Forbury Park next week. She is already a warm favourite for the President s Handicap on the opening day, and the fact that she is now trained by W. J. Tomkinson enhances her prospects of success.
