PROBLEMS OF GREAT BRITAIN.
CONSERVATIVES' PROPOSALS. (BRITISH- OFFICIAL • WIHELESS.) ..... (Received November 21st, 5.5 p.m.)" RUGBY, November 20. Mr Neville Chamberlain, , chairman of the Conservative Party organisation, in a speech, yesterday, said that in the Cunsorvative view there were three ways in which the present situation should be tackled. (1) By a reduction in the direction of taxation which involved a reduction in national expenditure. (2) By protection of the Home market.
(3) By. the development of Imperial trade through reciprocal trading agreements. ~
A bolder and more rapid' policy than, safeguarding was necessary, and although time would bb - required for building up a scientific and ■ carefully adjusted tariff, an emergency tariff for the protection' of Home manufacturers could be introduced in a comparatively short time, which would be sufficient to restore the confidence of the- employers and workers alike. Behind the emergency tariff., they could' enter into the' ■ negotiations and investigations which were necessary.
