WAIMAIRI COUNTY COUNCIL.
BUSINESS OF PAST MONTH. Tho Waimairi County Council met yesterday. Present; Messrs C. li. Cross (chairman), W. J. Walter, W. P. Spencer, W. G. Chapman, J. Clelland, C. W. Moore, F. Scott, J. Liggins, If. Gardner, and T. O. Newnhara. Electricity Charges. A letter'was received from the Municipal Electricity "Department to tho effect that the Council's application for a reduction in charts for electricity used for the July-September quarter, during the power shortage, had resulted in an adjustment of the a-ccounfc on the basis of the charge for the corresponding quarter last year. This reduced the account from £2374 to £2148. The letter was received. Monthly .Reports. The foreman's report stated that in the Fendalton riding footpaths- were being graded ready for sealing to be done by unemployed men. The path in Fcndalton road wa-s finished, and Glandovey road and Plynlimon Kreet paths were. now. being done. Glan4<>vey road would later be graded, large Btones being removed in preparation for sealing work. Parts of Burnside road and Ham rood, in the Wairarapa riding, had been widened and footpaths formed. Six unemployed men were working on Ilam road. In the" Middleton riding three unemployed men had been given work chipping sides of roads. This work was almost completed. Four and a half chains on the west side of Golf Links road, Avon riding, had been widened and a footpath formed. About 1000 yards of spoil from the .North road had been delivered a-t the railway approaches on Marshland road for filling purposes, and 300 more loads would be required to complete the work. The fiH-ing-in of the road would be done for the full width. The report was adopted. The electrical engineer reported that twelve additional consumers had been connected during October. One new street lamp had been erected on Racecourse road. The whole of the electrical supply for the Metropolitan Show had been handled by the Waimairi County Council. In past years the Public W r orks Department had put in . a stand-by plant and had taken over half the load, but the Council dealt with the full supply this year, as they had an additional station in Hillmorten. All street lighting was now operating from 8 p.m. to midnight, standard time. The report was adopted. The county clerk's report, which was adopted, stated that the bank balance at November 20th showed a credit or' £3-113 6s 7d in the county fund a-ccount, and £5955 Os 3d in the loans account. Building permits had been issued to the value of £2925. The posi tion of the ridings at November 19th showed credits as follows: —Sty.*. £495; Marshland, £1116; Avon. £546; Belfast. £493; Harewood, £1315; Papanui, £733; Wairarapn, £l4lu: Fendalton, £1828; Middleton, £762.. . The position of the electrical department showed a credit of £3413. Inspection of the river Styx by a- committee appointed by the Council had revealed that the river was in good order, and the water was down to the level required by contract. It was considered advisable to have cuts at the lower reaches widened next year. Unformed Road. - The Christchurch. Drainage Board wrote, referring io c.n unformed road in the Xorthcote settlement leading to the sewage pumping station. The letter suggested that some oi the old metal from tho North, road paving
•work could be readily used for forming: and metalling the unformed road, A road snfft* cieat for a light motor-truck would meet the Board's requirements. It was decided that the Council were willing- to put, the shingle on the unformed road as requested, provided the Drainage Board bore the cost. Conveniences at Beach. A letter was received from the. New Brighton Borough Council relative to conveniences at North .Beach. In response to a request from the Waimairi Council that. tha New Brighton Council should share the cost of the erection of the buildings—£47 15s—which was proposed by Waimairi a letter was received from the Borough Council stating thart owing to the financial position, the Now Brighton Borough Council could not see its way clear to contribute towards the cost during th© current financial year. The latter was received, and it was decided to ask the City Council to contribute. Excess' Bates Refund. The ChrUtchurch Drainage Board wrote regretting that it could not see its way clear to grs-nt th© application of the Council for & refund of £2753, for alleged excess rates collected in the "Waimairi County. Tho letter was received in the meantime. On the motion of Mr Walter, it was decided to grant £5 towards the New Brighton beach patrol.
