SCOUT NOTES.
' ' *• [Exclusive to The Peess.j [By Lone - WOLF.] The Commissioner says;.. •.-/ ~ There - was - quite' a good attendance at the Scouters' meeting on .Thursday night, including S.M.'s from. Ashbtirton and Rangiora., whom we were, glad - to, seo. Scoutmasters from the country should come in to Scouters* meetings whenever they pan, as otherwise they are apt to get but of touch with the movement. 1 At tho meeting a number of subjects were dealt , with. The question ot qualified campmasters came m for a good deal of discussion. The amended Hulo' 63 of the P.b.R. says that the officer in charge should possess the campers' 'badge. Unfortunately there, are not many Scouters who -have the .badge, and'we want ail Soouts to go into camp this summer. To meet this difficulty Commissioner Rich is giving a special course for warranted officers in camping oh 26th. All Scouters who wish to take their troops'to camp, should avail, themselves of this opportunity to becpme qualified to take charge of a camp. It will be too late to think about this at Christmas time. Group committees should begin early to form their plans for summer camps and see that their troops will have an experienced Scoutmaster to take charge of them. It 1 should be clearly understood that no camps can be held without the-permis-sion of a commissioner. Forms of "Permission to Camp" are now being sent to all group secretaries. Tho resignation of our badge secretary (Mr Lawrie), owing to pressure ot business, has put us into a difficult position. Now that the badge examination system is organised, a great j number of examinations are required, j and many detailed arrangements have to be made with examiners and with Scouts. Some officer must be appointed to look after this, or endless confusion j will be inevitable. Whom can we get ? Of course it means a great deal ot work, b,ut a movement like Sfcoutnfg depends'on voluntary effort, and there must be numbers of old Scouts who should ' be ■ willing to help- 'We are expecting a good d£al of help in ail
matters connected ' with the Chiefs visit, from the Rover crewsj who are going to be a leading feature of the movement this year. -. The most interesting subject brought up at the Scouters' meeting was the _ rally on March 7th. Several troops' have already decided on the , Scout activity which they will demonstrate;; Thus Addington and Trinity ?, are training Cor gymnastic, exercises,, and Addington-is alsogivinga display of Maori carving. Edge ware, Woolston, and: Papanui intend to put up bivouacs suitable for Scouts on hikes. > Spireydon will specialise in models, and Waijsewa is making a collection of, native woods. i Next week thete. be a Dominion conference in Wellington which will be attended.by all Commissioners?, "It will probably last three days and will deal With a number of interesting Scout (Questions. Let me tell you a little story. Metropolitan headquarters does not specialise in being tidy. We have not yet • invested in a broom. One morning last week I found the office swept and garnished and" the'floor scrubbed and looking unusually clean. You would like to know what Scouts did this good turn? Take off your hats to—the Girl Guides. * Listen, all you AVolf Cubs! . Com- 1 missioner Desmond has now been appointed an atela leader. This position for Cubs is similar to a deputycamp chief for Scouts. There ape only three akela leaders in the DominionMiss Wilson, Mr Middleton, and Mr Desmond. ■ . -' . " ■"
