HEATHCOTE NEWS.

+ A very pleasaut evening was speut at the house of Mrs V. Bloom, Bridle Path road, on Friday. The evening was spent in cards, games, and musical items. The winners of the card tourney were. Mesdames Leathwick and Ashley (consolation), and Messrs D. Dickey and C. Munnings (consolation). Those present included Mr and Mrs L. M. O'Sullivan, Mr and Mrs Leathwick, Mr and Mrs D. Dickey, Air and Mrs Munnings, Mesdames Ashley, and Bloom, and Messrs Coombes, and G. and C. Munnings. Gardeners in the district are experiencing a very busy period at present planting tomatoes. A large quantity is being planted this year, but the weather has been unfavourable and planting is considerably later than usual. The first of the season's peas and potatoes were marketed during the last fortnight, and good supplies will soon be available. Hothouse tomatoes and strawberries are looking very well and, given warmer weather, will ripen in the course of the next week or two. Orchardists report a good setting of stouo fruits. At the monthly meeting of the school committee, which was held in the school on Thursday, there were present— Messrs Harvey (secretary). O'Neill, I Carter, Dickey, and Collins (chairman). \ and Mesdames Morgan and Wakefield, and Mr Colvillc (headmaster). The committee passed a motion of sympathy with the infant mistress, Miss Thomson, in the loss of her mother. The School Committees' Association's report was received. The headmaster reported that the arrangements for tho break-up concert were well in hand. Arrangements for the Christmas free were left in the hands of a ladies' committee. The secretary was instructed to apply for a subsidy for the new library. Mr and Mrs L. M. O'Sullivan and family, of Timaru, who have been the guests of Mrs Bloom, Bridle Path road, hove returned home. Mr B. Westbrook, who was recently transferred to the Postal Department, Xelson, ii spending a holiday with his parents, Mr and Mrs B. Westbrooke, of Hills road. Mrs Itichcs, of Woodbury, is the guest of Mr and Mrs A. T. Robertson, Bridle Path road.
