MT. ALEXANDER.

SUCCESSFUL ASCENT. A successful ascent of Mount Alexander was made on Sunday by a party of climbers consisting of Mr H. Ahnfeldt (Otirn), Mr A Snowden (Otira), Mr W. Bird (Otira), and Mr J. Davis (Christchurch). A start was made from Otira at 4 o'clock on Sunday morning and the Top Peak was reached at 12 80 p.m. On the ascent and on the return journey the going waa exceptionally bad owing to iceglazed rocks and every precaution had to be taken. There was some very good rock-climbing for about 3000 feet and the situation was rather difficult at times on account of perpendicular rock faces that had to be negotiated. However, a rope was brought into use and the difficulties were overcome. When about 6000 feet u- and getting over a most difficult part Mr Bird had a very narrow escape from falling on the rocks below. Be was climbing to the right from the rest of the party when he touched a rock which fell against him, and it was fortunate that he managed to retain his hold until one of the party reached him and helped him out of his awkward position. A good view was obtained from the top, and all the major peaks of the Southern Alps could be seen.
