Every year about this time two tuis make their appearance at the back of humncr, and delight those fortunate to hear them with their melodious song, it is the opinion of an old resident who has noticed their visit for some considerable period, that thc whole purpose of their stay is to avail themselves of the sweet-flavoured flax flowers, a large amount of which grows in the gullies at the back of Sumner. The length of their visit is nearly alwavs in thc region of a month. General. Passengers to town on the morning •trams on Wednesday were interested to see what appeared to be a large porpoise stranded on the mud flats close to the tramway viaduct. Whether it was dead or alive was a matter for conjecture, but the sight of a seagull pecking idly at the head confirmed the impression that thc former was the case. The creaturo disappeared with the next high tide. Mt. Pleasant Tennis Club. The work of relaying the two new courts is proceeding apace, and members hope that by the holiday season they will bo ready for use. It was found that, owing to somewhat limited space and the fact that the old court was really facing the wrong way, it was necessary to lay the two new courts at right angles to the old one. This entailed taking down the fence round the old court, but the materials will be used for the fence round the new courts. Swimming. The pupils of tho Sumner District High School took advantage of tido and weather, and held their swimming sports early this week. The senior championship event proved a very even contest, and resulted: Roy Brottell 1, Bob Beveridge 2, Winstone Webb 3, Don Olimie 4. In tho junior event Jarl Sarelius beat John Rendlo by fivo yards, Noel Collins, being about tho same distance away third. ' The senior championship girls' race resulted in a struggle between Thelma Wills and Eleanor Turnbull. The positions varied, but they finished abreast. Lois Cook was third, with Merle Cunningham close up fourth. In the handicap race the girls proved too strong for the boys, and won easily. Bowing Club. Keen interest is .being displayed by members of the Sumner-Redcliffs Rowing Club this year. At the Lyttelton Regatta on December 17th crews will compete in the following events: — Senior pair oar, Senior Doubles. Junior Doubles, Maiden Pair Oar, Youths' Pair Oar,. Youths' Doubles, and Youths' Singles. Two crews have been enterod for the Maiden and the Youths' Pair Oar Races. Plunket Society. The Sumner-Redcliffs branch of the' Plunket Society met at the residence of Mrs W. A. Beaven, Rcdcliffs. A report on the recent cake stall showed that £27 had been rasied. A resolution was carired thanking all who had helped. Opportunity was taken to make a presentation to Mrs Seymour, the late treasurer, who is leaving for Christchurch. Reference was made to the consistent interest maintained and hard work undertaken by Mrs Seymour, ard the best thanks and good wishes of the society were extended to her. W.O.T.TJ. The annual meeting of tho Sumner branch of the W.C.T.U. was held on Wednesday, Mrs J. McCombs presiding over a large attendance. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted, showing a credit balance of £lO 16s 9d. Mrs W. J. Williams gave an address, for which she was thanked. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs J. McCombs; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. McAra, I. Wilson, and fc. Sherrard; recording secretary, Mrs G. A. Alexander; corresponding secretary, Mrs A. Topping; treasurer, Mrs J. A. Booth; White Ribbon agent, and cradle roll superintendent, Mrs R. Ogier;. evangelistic secretary, Mrs MacMillan; anti-gambling secretary, Miss Cock; musical convener, Mrs H. W. Heslop. Musical items were contributed by Mesdames H. W. Heslop, B. H. Henley, and Miss Smart. Essay Competition. Some time ago the local branch of the W.C.T.U. arranged for an. essay competition amongst the pupils of the Sumner District High School. Thc work was done under the supervision of Mesdames E. Ogier ani 11. .W. Heslop, and th Row W. J. Williams acted as examiner. ' The results were:— High School Girls— Dorothy Alexander 'l, Joyce Dcane 2; Hazel Hansen, special for neatness in writing and composition). Boys—Ron Glackin 1, Fred Glackin 2. Primary School—Joan McConville 1, Mavis Boulton 2. P.W.M.U. Tho final meeting of the Presbyterian Women's Mission Union was held at Mrs A. Topping's home on Thursday afte- loon. Thc treasurer reported that the recent "Bring and Buy" afternoon had realised £ls. A most enjoyable musical programme was supplied by Mesdaaifs Cooke, Langdale, and Wilson, and Miss Gcrraml.
