A DELIGHTFUL GATHERING. In the private reception room at Ballantyne's, yesterday afternoon, tho members of the Inner Circlo- and of the Calliope Club entertained Mrs Gore Newell, the leader of botli literary circles, at a very pleasant party. The tables were beautifully decorated with' pastel tinted sweet-peas, and the guest of honour was presented on arrival with a, bouquet of roses. After Mrs Eowron had spoken a few words of welcome, Miss M. Just read a brief resume of the year's work, allowing that both circles under Mrs Newell's direction had covered a surprising amount of, ground at their fortnightly meetings.
On behalf of the members Miss Just wished Mrs Newell a very happy Christmas and presented her with a beautiful French hand-painted shawl. In returning thanka, Mrs Newell said that her connexion with the J.nner Circlo and the Calliope Club gave her the greatest pleasure, and she would look forward to meeting all tho members again on her return from Melbourne, in the year.
