Sir Alfred Robin is a guest at Warners Hotel.
Mr Henry Horton, joint proprietor of the "New Zealand Herald," Auckland, is on a visit to Sydney. Mr S. J. Collett, Chief Clerk, Tourist Department, arrived from Reei'ton last evening, en route to Wellington. The Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward. M.V., will leave- Wellington tor Invercargill to-morrow night, and will return to Wellington on December 17th. Dr. H. G. De-nham, of the Canterbury College professorial staff. returned to Christchurch from Wellington yesterday morning. Recent arrivals at the United Service Hotel are Messrs H. D. Robertson (Auckland), R. R. Schnorberger (Paris), and J. W. Burtenshaw (Auckland).
Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., Leader of tho Opposition, arrived from We.lington yesterday and went on to Greymouth by tho Midland express. Sir Chas. Statham, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Mr T. K. Sidey, M.P., passed through Christchurch yesterday morning on their way south to Dunedin.
The Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) will spend the Christmas and New Year holidays in Christchurch, but will go away for a short period early in January.
Oplonel J. Hutchpn, secretary to the Samoan Administration, and Mr S. J. Smith, chief clerk, Department of External Affairs, are expected from Wellington to-day.
Mr A. W. Hudson, assistant Inspector, in Agriculture, Department of Agriculture, Christchurch, is in the North Island at present on business connected with agricultural experimental operations.
Mr R. S. Kent, Divisional Superintendent, South Island Railways, and Mr L. W. Robertson, Locomotive Engineer, who have been visiting Westport, returned to last evening.
Dr. H. D. Broadhead, who was granted leave of absence some time ago by the Canterbury College Board of Governors, returned to Christchurch on Wednesday. Guests at Warner's Hotel include Messrs R, F. R. Beethami (Masterton), James Mehan (Timaru), George Dawson (Wellington), George Pascoe (lieeftoa) M. A. Bolitho (Reefton), J. D. Flasliman (Sydney), and G. 3>. Birrell (Wellington). A claimant to the honour of being the oldest living person born in Canterbury is Mr John Manson, aged 82, now residing at Oxford, North Canterbury. He was bom at Teddington in 1845 and hopes to be present at the anniversarny celebrations to be held on December 17th.
Mr W. T. Foster, M.A., B. Litt., at present Inspector of Secondary Schools, has been appointed principal of the Napier Boys' High School in succession to Mr W. A. Armour, who has been appointed to Wellington College. There were over 30 applications for the position.—Press Association.
Captain J. S. M. Ritchie, who until recently was in command of the H.M.S. Dunedin, and whose term of service on the New Zealand naval station has just expired, has received the appointment of naval attache at the British Embassy at Washington. Captain Ritchie will leave Auckland on December "20th by the Aorangi, en route for England, where he is under orders to report at the Admiralty about the end of January.
