Footfall made his reappearance.on the Riccarton tracks yesteraay morn inc A slight lameness in tront **> noticeable as'io trotted out, but alter a round on the plough at a slow canter, the signs disappeared it is practically certain that hisAutk land Can preparation will not be con tinned, as in his present condition, would not be practicable to gnej' anv fast work within the nest «eek, and he is a horse who requires n lai |,a amount of galloping prior to a rut. If he is not sent north. l , n™H ,as « > iU*ements at will also Je cancelled, and F. E. Jones will ride ■R-nier in the Cup. Cliildsplay was sent six furlong the reverse wav on the at Riccarton vesterday. an easy manner.
The Mason team were all gWen strong work at Riccarton yesterdaj, with the exception of Eulslie, «ho without being extended ran six tmlongs on the plough in 1.21 This Jll> is excentionally well, and she and Agrion are sure to add to the'r records -luring the Auckland Meeting. Count Cavour galloped a mile aud a ,-inarter at Riccarton vesterday on the olough, being assisted over the concluding mile by Satrap. An even pa,-e was maintained throughout, the Hill jouinev beine covered in 2.10 3-5, the last mile takincr 1.44 Count Cavour finished slwhtlv in front of the three-year-old, who," however, was responsible tor a pleasing effort. Projector showed his customary speed by beating Greyfinch over four rurlongs on the plough at Riccarton yesterday in 53 2-5. The former is better now than he has been for some time, and is capable of winning flat races » engaged at the forthcoming Meetings He certainlv looks a great proposition for hurdle "events later in the season.
Martarma gave his stable mate Oriflamb a good start in a six furlong gallop on the plough at Riccarton yesterday, and beat him home in 1.17 2-5. The Derby candidate benefited considerably by his Timaru racing, and will be in infinitely better order at EUerslie than he was at Ricqp.rton last month.
Centrepiece and Rapier were agam associated in a mile task on the plo gu at Riccarton yesterday, the latter finishing with an advantage in 1.44.2-5. It is safe to say that both these horses will be at the top of their form for the Auckland Meeting
Nincompoop and Tarletoh. who have been nominated for the southern Meetings, galloped well over five fur!ong3 at Riccarton yesterday. The latter struck himself during the task, and was lame afterwards, but the troublo is not likely to be serious.
The two-year-olds, Viscount,, brother to Count Cavour, and Corsetiere, b\ Solferino from Dame Straitlace, in T. H. Gillett's stable at Riccarton, have been allotted some short sprints of late, and both show promise of developing into useful gallopers. They haye been given plenty of time to furnish and will not he asked to carry silk until next autumn.
Arrowmir and Rina Maunga hav» been getting through attractive work recently at Riccarton, J - Beale will take the pair to the West Coast fixtures. "What is now known as the Nohra case is causing much interest in racing circles, especially on the West Coast. It will be remembered that J. Nohra, of Reefton, was disqualified for life by the Canterbury District Committee early in the year for an alleged attempt to bribe J. McLennan and D. Cotton in connexion with the running of Moorland at the Greymouth Meeting in December last, but it later transpired that the matter was outside the jurisdiction of that committee, who rescinded the punishment. The Greymouth District Committee then took no the case, which was adjourned >n Tuesday until December 20th, owing to the absence of the two principal witnesses. It appears that McLennan asked rJie committee to forward his expenses to Greymouth, but as these were not forthcoming he did not make the trip, while Cotton could not get away owing te sickness iu the family. As a result of their non-attendance, both stand disqualified for one month. Martian Spear and Cornstalk covered six furlongs at Riccarton yesterday on the plough in 1.18 3-5. The former will be racing at the West Coast Meetings; but no programme has ceen arranged for Cornstalk.
Sadden Storm, who has been given an easy time since the New Zealand Gap Meeting, is now again one of the. active brigade at Riccarton. Her next racing will be done at Wellington. Countersigi's nomination for a couple of races at the Auckland Summer Meeting was purely a complimentary one, as all arrangements have Been made for her to accompany Rotor to the southern fixtures at Christmas. Both executed useful tasks at Rkcar ton yesterday, and a successful trip seems in view for the Riccarton trainer, E. Scoullar. The North Island-owned Koauau is still at Riccarton in charge of W. McDonald, who was recommended for a provisional trainer's license by tho Canterbury District Committee on Tuesday last. Koiuau appears to in good order, and should pick up & Tiurdlft race at the southern holiday Meetings. Sagittarius has been showing signs of soreness since the South Canterbury Meeting and is at present enjoying a respite from active work. The Westland Racing Club' received very satisfactory nominations for their Summer Meeting, and Riccarton stables are strongly represented, the following from headquarters figuring in the list:—Jarretiere, Motor Smash, Kenmore, Malmsey, Rina Maunga. Smithereens, Bronstell, Philanderer, Orfflarab, Rapid Rose, Heisler, Tenterfield, Te Kawa, Diana's Lad, Thorndale, Fresco, Rascal, Arrowmir Moratorium. No Response, Gold Mint. Silk Stockings, Nunumi, Spode, Gaybird, Donne, Lytup, St. Nicholas, and Pickaninny. Diana's Lad, in R. Ellis's stable, continues to give satisfactory displays over the battens at Riccarton, and yesterday jumped four fences in good style.
Zaragoza has come to hand very quickly after her lengthy spell, and .nay be seen to advantage later in the season.
Merry Mint and The Hawk were to have arrived back in New Zealand this week but their departure was postponed until Friday next, owing to Merry Mint's swollen hock. Since his return from Melbourne Merry Mint's trouble has kept him on the easy list, and, though Mr Clare hoped to run him at the Auckland Cup Meeting, it is likely that he will have to put the aelding by until later in the season.
It is callsd to Australian papers ihat Captain Cuttle the 1922 English Derbv winner, has been sold for £30.000 to go to Italy. Captain Cuttle's stud fee was 300 guineas, and Lord "Woolavington owns Hurry On, sire of Captain Cuttle, while Coronach, who is com-
mencing at tho same owner's stud nest year, is also bv Hurry On, so that he had a plentiful supply of the same blood. Captain Cuttle has had wu«*.> in England this year, one being King George's smart two-jear-old filly Scuttle.
It has been decided to withhold the publication of the handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club's Summer Meeting until after the Oamaru Jockey Club's Meeting. They will appear on December 19th, and acceptances now fall due on December 23ml—Press Association.
Not onlv will the trainer of each winner at 'Gosford on Tuesday, December 20th. get money for the Christmas lurkev. but he will get a ham as well, the latter being supplied by the club (snvs the Svdnev "Referee"). It is an" unusual trophy to bo associated with every race on a programme, but will be thoroughly appreciated by the luokv recipients. One thing certain is that it is not a trophv likely to find its way into a pawnshop. TROTTING NOTES. AcceDtances for the Auckland T.C.'s Summer Meeting close at 5 p.m. today. Nominations for the Westland T.C. and Winton T.C. Annual Meetings close to-day. Acceptances for two trotting events at the Oamaru Jockey Club's Spring Meeting close to-day.
Nominations for four trotting events at the Reefton Jockey Club's Jubilee Meeting close to-morrow. At the meeting of the Canterbury Owners' and Breeders' Association held on Wednesday a resolution was passed that the attention of the iSew Zealand Metropolitan and Canterbury Park Trotting Clubs be drawn to tho lack of an ambulance room at Addington, and in the course of the discussion it was stated that there were no facilities there for the treatment of any accidents that might happen, and at the recent Meeting'one spectator who had collapsed was taken to the riders' and drivers' room and treated there. Mr R. Wallace, treasurer to the Canterbury Park Trotting Club, states that although no ambulance room was specially erected there is always a room available at the Addington course for the treatment of anyone who may be taken ill. In the room there is a chair and stretcher, and the fact that a spectator at a recent Meeting after collapsing was taken to the jockeys' room was not any fault of the club officials. The correct thing to do in such a case was for those attending to the sick man to have approached one of the ambulance men, who are always in readiness on the course. The ambulance people, Mr Wallace states, know quite well where the room .is, and had they been approached matters would have been different. Full ambulance equipment is always on the course on race days, and all through the year a box containing necessary appliances for first aid treatment is kept in readiness.
H. W. Aker has Waitaki Girl in solid work at New Brighton. The Harold Dillon mare is a good pacer at her best, and the Christmas Meetings should find her paying her way. The grass track at New Brighton was open yesterday morning, and there were a goodly number of spectators to watch some interesting work. William the Great and Talent were given a useful work-out over a mile and a half. Both horses are in firstclass order and should run w«ll in their engagements at Wellington tomorrow.
Nancy McKinney, Wild fllebe. Shadowland, Brigand, Todd Bingen, Asset, andl Pieter Timmerman were all given strong work.
Machine Gun and Escapade, engaged at the Auckland Summer Meeting, were not fully extended, but Loganwood and Sea Pearl traversed a fast mile together. Just before reaching the finishing post Loganwood broke his hopples and was pulled up.
Cannonball showed an inclination to go off pacing, but once he struck his right gait he gave a good trotting..
A lot of interest is being taken in the Wellington Trotting Club's Meeting, which will be held at the Hutt Park Club's course to-morrow. Trotting is rapidly gaining in popularity in the Wellington - district, and with a big number of good class horses engaged to-morrow's fixture sliould be quite as successful as any previous Meeting. A number of improvements have been made to the Hutt Park course since the last Meeting, and this fixture will see the opening of the new totalisator house, which up to date in every particular. The New Zealand Gold Cup is the principal event of tho day, and the starters will include the Auckland Cup candidates, Logan Park and Ahuriri, whose displays will be watched with interest. The Electric Handicap, of a mile and a quarter, 2.46 class, should also see a stern battle, as Prince Pointer, Bonny Logan, Ahuriri, Logan Chief, Queen's Own, and Black Admiral are all quite at home over the distance.
In regard to tho refusal of the Auckland and Otahuhu Trotting Clubs «> allow their Meetings to be broadcast, the general manager of the Broadcasting Company (Mr A. R. Harris) states that 'the company is only interested in broadcasting trotting events as an outcome of the wide public demand for this form of service, particularly during the holiday season. Most of the sporting organisations, he states, including racing and trotting clubs, have taken a sporting view of the matter, and allowed the company to broadcast their Meetings to the benefit of many thousands of their fellow sportsmen who have found it impossible to attend in person.

The Woodville District Jockey Club's Snmme'r Meeting was concluded to-day in dull, cool weather. An interesting win was recorded when Cimabue scored in the sprint event from Epistle and Inner Harbour. Tho Leighton three-year-old outclassed the opposition in a style which suggests that ho will be at his best by the time the Auckland Meeting comes up for decision. David Garrick scored well in the Gothard Memorial Handicap from Kilmiss and Waicullus. The hot favourite, Bennanee, made & disappointing showing, but he got into a lot of trouble in the race. Favourites won only two races, and altogether backers did not faro well. Panorama paid a big price in the Hurdles, and the winner of the two-year-old race also returned double figures. This was reflected in the betting, the totalisator return for tho day being £13,623, as against £14,154 on the second day last year, a decrease of £521. The total for the two days was £27,581, compared with £29,463 last year, a decrease of £IBB2. Fapatawa Hurdles.
Red Fuchsia was a red-hot favourife 'for the Hurdles. Powhiri got badly left at the start. Panchito, Hymgreat, and Del Sarto made tho early running from Red Fuchsia and Revel. Powhiri made up ground in the middle stages, and had run to the front at the half-mile post from Red Fuchsia, Revel, and the bunch. 'Round the turn Panorama moved up, and followed Powhiri over the last fence. Getting up on the rails, he beat Powhiri by a short neck. Hymgreat was two lengths away third, with Revel fourth, and then Red Fuchsia and Vexatious. Powhiri was tho best of good things beaten, first by losing so much ground at the start, and then by allowing Panorama to get up on the inner in the run to the post. Hymgreat, for a beginner, made a very creditable showing. He lost several lengths in the middle stages of the running through hitting a fence, and was coming on again at the finish. Revel again ran a good race, but Red Fuchsia was not so good as yesterday, and again had every chance. Vexatious was staying on at the finish. Novice Stakes. Plane was a firm favourite for the Novice Stakes, with Royal Picture, who drew No. 1, the best-backed of the others. Mendip delayed the start, and when let go he got off poorly, as did CornbiU, Minter, and Greengrocer, while Plane was also badly away. Royal Picture soon assumed command, closely attended by Eliminator, Mark Mint, Hinekatorangi, and Sky Bird, while Skyrider also began well from the extreme outside, and was prominent. Royal Picture led round tho turn and into the straight, followed by Eliminator, Mark Mint, and Hinekatorangi. Royal Picture held his-place and won by two lengths from Eliminator, who beat Mark Mint by a length. -Veronese came fast into fourth place from well back, and the next were Spcarmiss, Hinekatorangi, and Greengrocer. Royal Picture made good at long last, and may now go on winning, for he was never in danger of defeat. Eliminator is a three-year-old filly by Leighton, and half-sister to Hypnotic. She is one of Mr W. G. Stead's team, and she ran a good race, this being her first start. Mark Mint should win during the holidays. Varonesc, Spearmiss, Hinekatorangi, and Greengrocer all ran fair races. The latter in particular did well after getting off so poorly. He looks a greatly improved colt. Gothard Memorial. Anolo was scratched for tho principal handicap, and backers went solidly for Bennanee, and he was twice as well backed as Royal Game and Kilmiss. Moepai, Kilmiss, Waicullus, and Royal Game comprised the leading division early, Benannee being last, pulling hard. Down the back Moepai led from Kilmiss, Waicullus, David Garrick, and Royal Game. Kilmiss took charge before entering the straight and turned for home dear of the bunch, in which Moepai, Waicullus, Wild Pigeon, Royal Game, and David Garrick were prominent. David Garrick threw out a strong challenge over the last furlong and got up to win by a head. Waicullus was two lengths away, with Novar fourth, Wild Pigeon fifth, Benannee sixth, and Royal Game seventh. David Garrick got into s lot of trouble over the last three furlongs, bat luckily got clear and finished too strongly for Kilmiss. Waicullus ran a good race. Bennanee steered into all sorts of trouble throughout, and any chance lie had was finally gone when he -turned into the straight last of the field. It was not one of J. Barry's happiest efforts in the saddle. NoTar ran fairly well. Wild Pigeon looked a possibility on the turn, but she failed to come on in the straight. Royal Game hardly ran up to his first day's form. Kiritaki Handicap. Aston was a warm order for the five furlong Hack Scurry. Lady Orby and Helotis began best, and led Aston to the straight. Here Helotis set sail for the judge, but Aston caught her to win by a head. Miss Pat finished best for third money, three lengths away. Royal Picture was fourth, followed by Lady Orby and Royal Time. The winner is a good horse, but he is affected in the wind, and he only just got home from Helotis, who is developing useful form. Royal Picture was penalised 81b, • and also carried 21b extra. He was not able to begin so well as usual, nor did Miss Pat, both appearing late on the scene. Lady Orby was fair, but the others had no chance. Mon Mint was left. Railway Handicap. Cimabue, with R. Reed up, was a red-hot order for the open sprint, carrying something like half the pool. Inner Harbour showed out first, but Cimabue took charge at the half-mile and led round the turn from Inner Harbour, Epistle, and Gold Box. Epistle drew up a little on Cimabue in the straight, but the latter went away again nearing the post and won by two lengths. Inner Harbour was four lengths further back, with Gold Box fourth, and then Standard, Sarchee, and Imitation. The winner outclassed the opposition, but Epistle ran quite a good race.
Juventtt Handicap. I The big field of 18 all went to the poet in the two-year-old race. The local repre- ! sentative, Pure Gold. wa« a solid favourite from Australia and Chit. Gold Bag began smartly, and led Lady Gen, Amplifier, and Tea Miss to the half-mile post, with Briar Root moving up. Amplifier then took charge and led round the turn and into the straight from Gold Bag, Briar Root, Shot Silk, and Tea Mis?. Amplifier was still in front when well in line, and'looked the winner till Mou- I toa Treasury came with a great run from the roar aud went on to win by half a length. Amplifier was a length ahead of Shot Silk, with Briar Root a close fourth. Then came Gold Bag and Tea Miss. The ' winner, who is by Paper Money from Sasanof's sister, Moutoa Ivanova, has been showing improving form. He came to-day verv solidly from a long way back. He was ridden by T. Webster, son of A. D. Webster, who won sensationally at Ashhur&jt on Borsalene, and the crowd gave him a round of applause for his vigorous, finish. Amplifier, one of Mr W. G. Stead's team, is a half-sister by Leighton to Chignon, and showed good speed. It was her first run, and with racing she should turn out well. Shot Silk and Briar Root ran good races. Gold Bag, by Gasbag from tho speedy Bradamante, showed a lot of speed, and ran quite a good race. Tea Miss ran better than she did the first day. Australia, Chit, and Puro Gold failed to begin, and were never in the picture. Gorge Handicap. Partaga was a slightly bettor favourite than Superb King for the Gorge Handicap. Benmure, Partaga, Willow Wai, and Tanagra led down the back from Superb King, and at the half-mile Willow Wai went to tho front. He led round the turn from Partaga, Tanagra, Benmure, Grand National. Superb King, aud Horomea. Willow Wai led into the straight from Partaga and Superb King. There was a good tusßle up the straight, Superb King beating Partaga by a length, with Willow Wai three-parts of a length back. Horomea was fourth, followed by Grand National and Benmure. Superb King reversed the first day's positions with Partaga mainly through A. E. Ellis being in the saddlo, for he should have been much closer the first day. This made Partaga s third second in succession. Willow Wai ran a good race, and Horomea was also fair. Grand National ran creditably. Benmure, who secured the services of 'R. Reed at the expense of over-weight, showed a glimpse of his old form. Stewards' Handicap. Catkin, with Ellis up, was a pronounced favourite for tho concluding event, Tintoretto and Thurnbell being also well backed. In the early stages there were some quick changes amongst the leaders, but Tintoretto, Mandarine, Hypnotic, Henna, Ring Boy, and Catkin were all prominent. Atarena was up with the leaders down the back, and Butterscotch made a run on the turn, leading for the straight from Ring Boy, Mandarine, Catkin, Henna, and Tintoretto. Onee in line Ring Boy and Henna drew out, and when well in the straight Thurnbell came with a rush and joined in the issue. In a desperate finish Henna and Ring Boy deadheated, a nose in front of Thurnbell. Mandarine was s fair fourth, and the next to finish were Kalos and Butterscotch. It was a great wind-up to a good days* racing. Henna and Ring Boy were both very well ridden in the race. Thurnbell got a bad passage in the big field, and he ran about in the straight. He was very unlucky not to win. Mandarine again ran a good race. In fact, he never runs a bad one. Kaloß finished on strongly from a long way back. The extra weight stopped Butterscotch, who on the turn looked likely to repeat the first day's performance. Tintoretto was not good enough, and Catkin ran a disappointing race. MANAWATU R.C.
